It sounds like the throw out bearing in your clutch. I had one go out on me on my work truck.It did the same thing.

I wouldnt worry too much on the whining unless it happens to come back , personally the very first thing I would do is remove the serpentine belt, check all the pullies, spin and feel each one, that way all the rotating mass on the front of the engine is taken care of .

oh and a set of Stinker's P/S lines & that will take care of any line issues on the trucks.
a set of poly bushins to go with the P/S lines is an excellent upgrade & with a set of Cal-Tracs, she will be 100% better handlein.
