Viper V10 505ci Engine Longevity?

Hi guys,


Was just curious to hear what you guys, the pros, think our V10 engines are good for in terms of how many miles will they last with regular maintenance and oil changes. Well cared for engines. Mild bolt on mods, etc. Not thrashed engines. Sure we get on them a lot but not 24/7 abuse, no engine is made for that. I was thinking maybe 200,000 to 250,000 miles for a performance engine like this? Hear any horror stories or stories of how these engines just won't die? I'm not sure how much has changed since they V10 was produced but for this thread, the V10 in general. How long are they good for on average and what options are there for these engines when they are close to the end of their life. Re-bore/re-sleeve? New block? Mine is low, around 6,000miles, what have you heard some of these engines getting, mileage wise. :) Just curious is all.

Subjective question...just no way to tell. It was built to perform strong bursts of speed...I would think that the engineers were only designing to last a little beyond the warranty period.

There are so many different driving styles that your question is simply not one that can be addressed with any degree of accuracy.

In ideal situations as you have mentioned I think it would still be an issue of chance.

I don't think we have any at the current time over 100,000...but we may get a few. Most are being rebuilt due to failure after being flogged.

If longevity is the criteria...I will go with my Volvo...


Drive it like you stole it, rebuild frequently...it is a sleeved aluminum block that can be fixed...forged parts will help...but these are not engines for the weak of heart.

This is something that worries me as I bought a truck with 50k miles, but thankfully the last owner purchased a 100k mile warranty so I have no worries for 50k miles or until two years from now. :rock:

$100 deductible? They will probably never cover anything as I have no proof of any service records.
 
Check with your dealer...possibly they will have computer records of maintenance...there are lots of ifs, and buts in the contract...not many have been happy with major repair coverage.

Don't let this ruin your enjoyment...repair costs are just part of the ownership issues...on balance you will be very happy.

Well hopefully, I never have to use the major repair coverage although I'm going to look into the transmission being fixed. It slams out of first and reverse. :dontknow:

Another weird thing, my truck is an 04. It wasn't purchased until September of 05. Maybe that's why they stopped building these. Almost two years to sell it? And it was sold with 10 miles on it
 
I was over 11 months old when I bought mine off the floor. When They first came out, they were like the Challenger now. Maked way above sticker.

It took the dealer awhile also to get them also. My truck sat on the floor for over 3 months before I got it. They had to put it back down to sticker before anyone would bite.
 
The problem lies with the weight of the truck...plenty of GenIII vipers over 70k miles with no probs

thats what i was thinking.And chub ain't easy on his chit.!!100k should not be a problem.:rock:
 
With no mods, no major thrashing, and regular maintenance, it is reasonable to expect over 100k trouble free miles. I have not heard of many problems with stock trucks. Try to get more power out of it and you are playing with fire.

Do you think this goes for making the engine breathe free also? Putting a CAI and a catback on and cutting out the cats. How does the engine react to this? It should last longer from what I've heard. :dontknow:

basically if ya dont us NOS, forced induction, or go to the track every weekend.

keep the oil changed, drive it normal, change plugs ,wires, filters in a normal manner, the truck should last a very very long time.

but any vehicle once the "heavy" modding begins , it shortens the lifespan.

so headers , exhaust, and such mild mods, shouldnt affect the longevity, unless you thrash the fool outta it:D
