Where are the carpenters here?

I need some advice on building a gate for my fence.

The opening is 7' and I need the gate to be that wide too, so that I can get my trailer through it.

Instead of making one 7' gate, I am thinking of making two 3.5' gates. This should make it easier on the posts and will allow me to open only one side if I want.

My biggest questions are, How can I:

-Secure the gates?

-Put a stop in the middle, but still be able to use the entire opening?

I already have 2 - 4x4x8's, 2 - 2x4x6's, and 16 - slats, all pressure treated. I know I will need at least 1 more 2x4x6 for the cross braces.

I also have 4 10" corner braces, 4 8" hinges, and all the lag bolts.


I am thinking about putting a 4x4 stake pocket in the center and getting another 4x4x6, that way I can remove the post when I need the opening, and put it in when I need the gate shut.

Does that make sense!?

Yes !!! You can also adapt Chain Link ( double drive gate ) hardware to it so you can also lock the gate when not in use. Just an idea Bro

That's what led to Bob Nardelli's down fall LOLOLOLOL The site blows I would say that you should fashion your own since those 4x4 pockets are no longer avail Bro.......I have not seen them in 9 years or so and the vendor is no longer in business as far as I know...Tell you what...I work 6-3 tomorrow and I will make some calls to Atlanta and talk to my buyer and see if I can find them for you....While I am a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge :dontknow: The name of the vendor fails me....Gimme some time and I will find them for you if they are still being made.....Promise :rock:

I guess if all else fails I could, like you said, make the pocket out of some buried 2x6's or something similar.

It would be stronger to pour a concrete patch in the center of the opening. In the concrete set a small diameter pipe. Then let your gates have a drop pin that drops into the pipe to secure them from swinging. If drop pins anchor the bottoms and you latch the gates at the top, it should be quite secure.

You can get a round cardboard form for concrete fairly cheap at HD.

This is what I would have suggested. Depending on your soil type, you may not even need the concrete. For instance, we've got clay, hard clay. If you drive a pipe down into it, it isn't going anywhere. If it's sandy soil, then yes you will want something more permanent to catch the drop pin. You will also want to run a 45 degree board across the back of each gate to keep it from sagging. I hate sagging . Sounds like you've gotten some good info and as always. We need pics of the finished project. Don't smash any thumbs. Is the stake pocket your looking for something like you would set a mailbox post with? It's a long stake you drive into the ground and then set you mailbox post into the pocket on top. Something like this? It's made by Ground Tech.

Yeah, we have sandy soil here. Will definitely need concrete.

So, if I pour concrete for the pin, how deep do you think it should be? The ground gets fairly solid after 6 or 8 inches, but it's still really sandy.

I will head to the local HD for the hardware and another bag of 'crete first thing in the morning.


And, for the diagonal, I was thinking of using a turnbuckle and wire instead. That way I can tighten it at the first signs of sagging. Thoughts?

I would dig down at least until the soil felt firm. Maybe a foot or more. Build a 12"x12" form and set the pipe in the center of it. The bigger it is the less it will move around. The turnbuckle and cable will work fine. The cable will stretch over time and need adjusting occasionally.

I think I will use the pin as you guys suggested. I will make a decision in the morning how deep and how big the center pour will be. I am actually thinking that I may just pour a 6" deep trough across the whole opening, and put the pin right in the middle.

Something to consider on this idea. A narrow trough poured with concrete might break when you drive over it. It might be best to pour in the center where your wheels will not hit it. Especially in sandy soil.
