Hey Guys. I want to tell you about an incident that happened at work. We have just finished our annual maintenance turnaround that involves cleaning our separators and treaters (oil biz). We had a crew of fitters working inside of one of the vessels, removing internals. The vessel was loto'd, purged and cleaned prior to their entry. They had a work permit, confined space permit and a rescue plan. The workers were using supplied breathing air. It was nightshift.
A man down call sounded from the hole watch. One of the workers had collapsed inside of the vessel. I cannot give you all of the details, but the rescue team had the individual out of the vessel in minutes and the medics took over. His heart stopped twice, but they were able to get it going again. He was med-evac'd to the nearest hospital (1 1/2 hour drive).
This young man is in his early 20's. He had apparently consumed several energy drinks to help stay awake during nightshift. We have many guys on our crew who drink 3 or 4 or more of these drinks during our twelve hour shift. There has been a fair amount of talk in the media about kids having health issues after consuming these drinks. I'm not saying not to drink these, but like any drink with caffeine...coffee/pop, take things in moderation.
The good news is, he is recovering. I hope some of the guys I work with learned something from this.

Lesson learned i hope,I have seen guys slam like 4 of these in a row.

I drive a hour and a half to and from work and only drink one on the way to work and one home. if i was to drink 2 in less than a 4 hour span I can really feel it.

This thread made me want a Monster :D
Good thing we have a vending machine at work.

i never drink any kind of energy drinks...

worst thing i've ever taken was a goody's powder and a coke...

i drink a good bit of coffee in the mornings, but don't usually drink any during the day...

Some people are more susceptible to the effects of caffeine.Add to it aspirin and it magnifies the effect.Add ephedra or pseudo-ephedrine and all of them work together to make the effects of each more pronounced. It is called stacking.

Used to do it long ago to get through heavy lifting workouts.Never touched the 'roids, but did combine those three often.

Caffeine and ephredra are hard on the heart, for both young and old alike.Caffeine makes your muscles tense, also.

Only time I ever tried energy drinks was when mixing Jack Daniels and Full Throttle in the black can.Tasted great, but oh ,how sick it can make you ! Poor Chub had to listen to me puke all night at Panama City gtg after I binged. Not a good combo : a wide awake drunk spouting political philosophy.Just ask Tony ( shhh ! Nelson keep it down ! shhhhhhhh!! )

Ahhhh Ephredra, I loved the real stacker 3 pills that they had. No joke I went from 245 to 171 in like 6 months. shame they are gone.

Was just on the phone with a girl about my Direct TV issues and while I was on the phone with her I called her out on the yawn (she sounded cute so why not :) ) she said she didn't get her Monster yet today so she was really tierd. Seems like some people live on the things.

I have a case for hunting season, when I don't get to get until 1230 1 am and have to get back up at 330 am. Usually only drink one a day though unless its jager bomb night :)

Not really.Like a ticking time bomb. They could go off at any time.Heart just goes kaflooey. Not at all good for sex life either.

Effectiveness is undisputed, but with a potential risk.

I have only one cup of coffee a day now.Only drink soda rarely, but once I start I drink too much.Have cut the sweet tea way back.High BP means doing without a lot of tasty but deadly stuff : salt, sugar, pork, alcohol, caffeine, and also no NSAIDS ,ephedra, the little blue pill, decongestants, and minimize stress.

glad he is ok:rock:

anyone ever try Hair of The Dog????

it will make ya pat the hair on the back of your neck down:D:rock:

I hear ya Nelson. High BP does suck:(

I believe those energy drinks state a safe limit to consume in a 24 hour period, but the young think they are indestructible, as I use to. Time teaches us all lessons, my repaired shoulder is a testament to that... My hip is acting up too, probably all those dead lifts catching up to me on top of the andro and other shit I use to take.

I'll stop there before this thread starts to become an old farts bitching thread. Glad the young man that's situation started this thread is doing well.

My best,
-jeff

The young man is not out of the woods yet; I heard he had to get a pace maker. 22 yikes!

Ever screw up and Snort the goodys and swallow your coke?

That can be true, but not for all people, I was using them for over 6 years straight.

over 50 pills a week. if you know what you are doing then you can take mass amount of supplements, cause thats all it is in a nut shell.

I don't really drink the energy drinks anymore, never really liked them to much. I don't drink coffee, or even alot of beer.

But like anything in the world, something simple can kill you, drink to much water, and you die, to much vitamin D and you can die, drink to much liquor, you kidneys and liver suffer for it.

but alot of people who have health problems to begin with are the ones who die. The O's player who died of eph, had a heart problem to begin with, add lack of water on a 100 degree day, and there was his bomb.

was not the energy pills what killed him, he killed himself. Alot of people just dont take care of themselves, and are quick to blame everything & anything.

Not saying this guy did this, but alot of people do. A good dose of cod liver oil will do wonders for the human body. I have never did drugs my entire life, no joke.

I am being 100% honest, but look at dope addicts, they do so many drugs. and live forever. the human body is very unique and some people can push their bodies harder than others can.

Your post shows how much rescue teams are needed and train hard to do a job to save someones life. If you know someone on a rescue team tell them thank you for thier hard work and commitment
