X-Metal Gen IV Shifter for Sale

I have now had both the Gen II and the Gen IV in my truck. There isnt anymore harmonics in the Gen IV compared to the Gen 2. There may be a little less if anything. In regards to raw performance, the Gen IV is head and shoulders above any other shifter out there. Agree with Patrick that it may not be for everyone due to its aggressive nature. Although I would believe the majority of the people who tried it would like it if not love it :D

Just my opinion. And I understand both sides...the shifter solves the issue of missing third gear under load...the trade off is doing away with the stock rubber insulator and having a direct link to the shifting mechanism...to some the added noise in the cab will not be acceptable.

Life is a serries of trade-offs.

hey prof, didn't you come up with a way to shield some of the noise that comes thru the gen4 shifter ?
if so, please share again.........

i'v had this shifter for about a week so far & my biggest issue is it likes to jump out of 2nd gear on downshifting....... boomer told me to loosen the shifter base & pull hard into 2nd a few times & retighten...... this helped some but i still get this problem once every other day...... i'm going to try boomers suggestion again...... it's bothersome because it often grinds 2nd a bit when it jumps out of gear..... don't wish to damage my transmission........:dontknow:

I too have experienced this problem, although not as often. My two biggest complaints are the difficulty in shifting 4 - 3 in high speed downshifts, I miss this shift approx 50% of the time and it is like the "hole" is just not there, no place for the shifter handle to go, it is like the gear is actually not there.

The other thing I really dislike, which I cannot seem to adjust to after all these years of being a manual transmission guy, is the "twist" that you experience on every shift. I cannot get over that, it is just a background irritation that constantly reminds me that it is doing something foreign. I did not say it is wrong, just something I myself do not like. I feel that the shifter should have had a bit more research and development, and ALL aspects of the operation should have been advertised UP FRONT so that a person could have had those things to consider prior to the considerable expense and outlay of time and effort to call again and again for support from the manufacturer.

So by shooting myself in the foot, I am sure that this will never sell to any members of this board. I just cannot in good conscience sell this and not at least tell of my reasons for the dissatisfaction.

I will just buy the B&M and be done with the whole mess.

the downshifting issue really should be addressed by boomer, i haven't had the 4th to 3rd issue you've had....... regardless, i would hope boomer would try to fix this issue for you......:dontknow:
as far as the twisting of the shifter is concerned, i'm sure that's the nature of the beast necessary for the best possible chance for not missing 3rd gear full throttle shifts (the reason boomer made this shifter to begin with)........ it is odd at first, but definitely an easy trade off for not missing 3rd on the upshift !!!!:D

Thanks to all of you who have had the grace and good taste to address both sides of this issue with objectivity and civility.

Rick's dissatisfaction with the shifter and/or with Gary is one that exists solely between the two of them. I'm confident that they will resolve it without any unpleasantness from uninvolved parties..

Thanks for allowing this situation to reach it's own point of resolve without cheapening it with rancor.

Too bad it was Rodney King who said, "can't we all just...get along"..... But fortunately the truth remains true despite the reputation of the one who speaks it.

Personally, I think it comes down to personal taste. Not everyone loves the GenIV shifter. Just like not everybody likes Silent D.... Some do.... Some think he's an frikkin' asshole......:eek:

Thank you Rick for the update.:) I tryed out one of the members new gen IV and I also DID NOT like the curve in the shift.:dontknow: I did check out the B&M and it is pretty nice for the money. I might even get one.

Mine makes a little noise,it does take some getting used to with the rotating feeling,and being shorter it does require a bit more effort to shift.However,the satisfaction of banging 3rd every time is worth it to me.I found that the more you try to "muscle" it ,the worse it is for accurate shifts.I have learned to use an open palm shift method and presto !,it works like magic !:rock:

I am sure that it will sell.Hope the B&M works out better for you.Thanks for an honest statement without the "bashing".:D
 
This kind of discussion is just what we come here for! Outstanding comments. To the point...for those who are interested in taming the noise, I purchased some 1/8th inch thick rubber from Lowes and made a buffer between the shifter levers...it reduced the noise by about 50%...but it made the shifting less precise. (I do like the previous suggestion of just turning up the volume on the sound system...)

I have now taken the rubber out, and due to a recent new mod, the noise is less of an issue...the noise is still there but I can't hear it for a wonderful sucking sound.

Regarding the twist...yup it is there, but this is the first time I have heard of a problem going from 4th to 3rd...and I have heard that Boomer has recommended jamming into third hard a few times to make sure the third gate understands who is boss...

I love mine, but as many have said there are differences. My truck is a go fast toy, yours maybe a filly finder, and someone else may have a luxury ride. The Boomer shifter will not miss third under WOT...that was my bottom line. Yours may be different.

I love you guys. I love this forum. Maybe I will teach in the future only "on-line"...wait, how can I shoot beavers on-line??? Never mind.

And to tell you the truth... I am actually starting to regret it because of these probs that people are having.

1.) I do not know why there would be any twisting in the shift? Can sombody please explain this?

2.) I do not want a shifter that is going to throw the trans out of 2nd gear

3.) I do not want a shifter that is going to be a complete whore to get into 3rd gear.

The noise I can handle...

But this other stuff... I hope it is alot less irritating and experiancible than some are making it out to be...

I just want to never miss 3rd gear on an upshift while racing, and I want to have a smooth working tranny.

Yes, there is a slight twist in the shifter arm between shifts. You notice it more when your fingers are draped over the shift arm. It was a little strange at first but it isnt anything that bothers me now. I have had the second gear issue but it never 'popped' out really but more of didnt get it seated properly. This isnt a lazy mans shifter as I mentioned in another thread. I still havent been able to put it through its paces since my master/slave were going out and in the middle of installing a new clutch/flywheel viper master/slave this week. So will be a few more weeks before I can work through things at WOT. I would guess the shifter will get a little easier on break in but probably in a smooth subtle way.

I dont see how anyone could miss third with the Gen IV, you just push up on the shifter and you dont have a choice but to shift into third ;)

There will never be a perfect shifter for everyone for this truck. You are fighting the funky tranny linkage and a longer than normal shifter arm that throws off precision. People tend to shift over and up on 2nd to third, 4th to 5th shifts and over and down on 5th to 4th, 3rd to 2nd shifts. You cant really do that with this tranny. With a longer shift arm your 'over' is to much and therefore you try to shift into places that the linkage isnt set up for. The Gen IV's heavy springs 'guides' the shifter in to the right places. Too much muscle and you are fighting the same thing that exists in all shifters. Now you do have to use some muscle when shifting the Gen IV but its a firm neutral downward pressure to keep intended gear location and to 'seat' the shift.

I have hit 3rd hard, lots...it is the shifter for those who do not want to miss 3rd .
 
I have the gen l or ll whatever it is and I have not missed 3rd yet with it. I missed all the time with the stock shifter.

It is almost impossible to miss 3rd.Just push foward and it's there.The noise is very slight.Can't hear it over the radio.The twisting has to do with the precision of the gates for each gear.After a while you don't even notice it.If you notice it a lot,you need to open up your grip on the knob (ok Mikey,I left myself open for one didn't I ?) It is a self-aligning shifter ,it will go to the center on it's own.You just push foward or pull back,no need to try to move it side-to-side.Trust me,you will love it !!!!!!!!!!!
