Recently a squirrel decided to crawl up in my my engine to keep warm and while there proceeded to rip into the insulated hood lining. I was able to trap and release him but then realized I had a power steering fluid leak from the line. I took the truck to the dealer last Saturday to run a diagnostic and they confirmed it was the line that had to be replaced.

The part came in Tuesday morning and by late afternoon I had to call to find out the status of the repair. Turns out they didn't know the line came separately from the fittings so they had to now order the fittings. Wednesday morning the fittings came in and by late afternoon I got a call saying the part failed so they had to order a new one. Thursday afternoon I call again and am told to keep my fingers crossed it will be ready by close.

Needless to say that was not what I wanted to hear and had to keep calling to then find out the second order failed and they have no idea how to replace the line. They are blaming the fact that the MOPAR parts may have sat on the shelf too long. The dealer returned the truck with a patch job until another new set of parts can come in Monday. Since Christmas is next week they want time to work with a tech to figure out why they can't get the hose to secure with the fittings. Never thought it would be this hard to replace a line. But, will have to take the truck back after Christmas once they figure out a strategy for installing the new line with fittings.

    Hello:

The "teflon" ball inside the factory swivel is allergic to power steering fluid and eventually they leak.

I took my PS hoses to an industrial hose place and had them make hoses without a swivel and they are leak-free (years later).
It think it was $75.00 for both hoses and they are good for 3250 p.s.i. which is 250 psi ABOVE the maximum pressure of the power steering pump and well above the average pressure the system will see during normal operation.

This also allows for using the proper factory fittings to seal inside the fan motor.

Using smaller diameter braided hoses changed the feel of the power steering as less volume is roaring through the system compared with o.e.m., and is just one of the things I didn't like about using an aftermarket "lifetime" power steering hose kit.

Having the hose shop make some from the existing hoses was a far better option for me.

I should have gone that route and stayed away from the dealer.

I should have asked this question on the forum before taking my truck in. Thank you for the details.

I have the JTSVP lines.. and I like them as they dont leak.

BUT I have noticed the difference between the feels of the lines, as if its micro binding. Seems to be a tad jittery or noisy... I dont know.
Either way makes sense now if the diameter of the lines are different.

Can you post some pics of the lines you had made Ronnie?

    PS

Merry Christmas to all in the Red Button Club!~

I never did get the aftermarket lines to stop leaking after several attempts and lots of fluid top-ups. I did NOT care for the flat washer trying to seal against the flat surface of the fan motor vs. the factory spigot with O-rings that went inside of the hole, instead.

On a quick left-to-right steering test (as in an evasive maneuver) my steering "snagged" with the smaller braided lines (not enough capacity, I guess)

So between the eternal leaks, change in steering feel and "snagging" , off they came.

    Others seem happy with them.

Tony's lines fixed my leak. The steering is a little heavier but not a problem. I also have his oil cooler lines and have been leak free since I installed them.

The original factory hoses were taken to an industrial hose place and new ones were made using the factory ends.
I asked them to retain the same lengths and basic shapes.

The biggest change was eliminating the problematic teflon-in-metal swivel in the top hose coming off of the power steering pump.
The swivel section was replaced with a simple (non-movable) connector.

As far as looks go, it looks just like the oem hoses.

I had them do the same for the rinky-dink oil cooler hoses.

OldColt has the original power steering lines on his 2006 so maybe they changed the leaky teflon setup in 06 as his never did leak like my 05 did.

Nice.. what did this cost? I have an 06, could they make another set?
Do you have to bleed the system some how.. can there be air in there I wonder causing this micro snagging feeling?

ANY Industrial Hose outlet should be able to help out. It was around $75.00 for the PS hoses to be made.
I think the oil cooler hoses were about the same cost; they are good for 3500 psi (total overkill) but they should never leak. :)
It was more like a moderate steering snag and showed up at different spots (with a fast wheel movement); not something I'd want to have happen again. It was repeatable so it wasn't a one-timer due to air or anything like that.

To get the air out, I just left the cap on loosely and slowly turned the wheel from lock to lock a few times which will eliminate the air in the system.

When I realized they were having so much trouble with installing the new line I asked for the return of my original only to have them say it was in such bad condition they disposed of it.

The temp line and fittings they installed are completely useless. My truck is basically hemorrhaging fluid like crazy. I had to call and leave four messages for the service rep before they even called back last Friday to say they will call again on Saturday to give me an update. Never got the call so had to leave another voicemail as the rep is never available. At this point I am planning on contacting the District Manager.

Sounds like your having a nightmare of an issue. May I ask what's the mileage of your truck? I've got 74K, with no line leaks of any type, whether it's PS, Trans, Coolant, etc.
