So, I just got my 2005 quad cab home. On the 225 mile journey, I noticed a couple of things -

    1) The coolant temp fluctuated between 195 and 205 and would rise to 210-215 after shutting the engine off.

    2) The transmission stutters a little at low speed / from a dead stop (does okay afterwards.)

Any ideas? How normal is this?

My tranny shudders from a dead stop as well, and I just had mine rebuilt last month. As long as I've had my truck (2 yrs) it's shuddered.

As for temp fluctuation, mine does the same thing. Someone on here with more knowledge might be able to give some insight. 195 - 205 is operating range.

Thank you, man! Makes me feel a little better. I'm hoping to get at least a year or two of fun out this thing before I have to spend any big bucks on 'er! lol

I replaced the tranny mount, as well, but the shudder is still there. It's possible the motor mounts may be a bit worn from previous owners dogging it. As the the temp, I replaced the thermostat last year for a 170° one. It still reads 195 - 205. I have to get a tune that tells the fan to come on at a lower temp. But, this engine was designed for higher temps from what I've read on here. Hopefully the previous owner didn't drag race with the truck. Cost me $3700 to rebuild the tranny and add a shift kit. The kit shifts hard, throws you into your seat, LOL. But from what others on here, and outside of here, the shift kit actually helps with longevity of the clutches by not allowing them to slip so much. If you find out something else about the shudder, let me know. Hopefully somebody like RottenRonnie on here, can shed some light on this.

Hello- Are you referring to the shift at low speeds and light-throttle that can't decide if it wants to be in first or second and jumps back and forth between them?

Ronnie, I hear you're legendary around these parts. Ya know what? That might actually be what it's doing; "hunting" gears that is. I took it out a few hours ago and it did seem to act better if I gave it more throttle from a dead stop - I'm guessing these engines don't like to lug, nor do these diesel autos?

    Ha!!

"Legendary" might be a stretch but... thanks! :)

The 48RE is somewhat of a Dinosaur but I've never really met a perfect automatic nor a perfect anything really.

The kickdown cable is really sensitive and a SLIGHT loosening of tension on it can reduce/eliminate the 1-2 Watusi.

My suggestion... Step on it a little harder and go back to whatever it was you were thinking about when it went 1-2, 1-2.

On the temperature side, these engines DO fluctuate a bit and I wouldn't worry about that either.

    Enjoy your rig!

All SRT vehicles typically run hot my 10's temp also fluctuates to 210 but trust the big cooling radiator fan to tame the heat. That is normal.

As for the tranny, I have no idea but mine sometimes does that but shifts normal. Ask Rotten Ronnie he knows more about the 10's internals.

No, not yet. Money has been tight lately, so I've been conservative with the cash. Hoping to do it in the next few months. I have a question. What would cause the truck to shudder from a dead stop? It's done it ever since I bought it. I replaced the tranny mount about a month after I bought it, but it didn't help. Could it be the motor mounts? It's not a hard shudder, but I notice it. It smooths out real quick, and it doesn't do it when downshifting or getting on it once she's rolling. Is it just because I'm banging ten cylinders?

    Please define shudder.
    The engine?
    The transmission?
    You?

It may not be appropriate to discuss banging on an open public forum.

Hold that thought, then try this...

    Start your engine.
    Step on the brake.
    Put in Drive.
With your foot firmly on the brake, slowly press on "the gas" to see if you feel the dreaded shudder.
If yes, when were the plug wires last replaced?

If not, go back to the very top request.^^^

I replaced the plugs and wires last year. It did it since the first time I rode in it before I bought it. I was thinking it was just normal because it's a V-10. I've done the foot on the brake, and it doesn't do it. It's a little vibration when I go from a dead stop and kinda get on it. If I just start out nice and easy, there's no vibration. But like I was saying, it goes away in a second or two as I accelerate. I'm starting to think that maybe the motor mounts may be a tad worn from all the abuse the truck has had over the years.

There should be a Shudder App for your phone....??

Sorry AMS3 without being there, it's a bit of a toughie. Doesn't sound serious though.
It DOES sound like something contacting something else when the engine rocks a bit under a bit of load.

Every time I try that I get this funny sensation that something is slipping and a lot of burning smell....like rubber. Then the mirrors won't work it's like it goes all foggy back there.o_O
