I just went through this a while back with a dishwasher. Three (count 'em) three control boards are in place that all talk to one another. Unless there is a specific error code on the main control panel, there is no way to know which of the three (or all 3) are at fault. Simple, you might think. Change all 3 and get it working again! The price of those parts exceed the price of a brand new dishwasher. Changing one at a time is not without risk as one may damage the remaining 2. And of course, no returns on electronic parts.
So in a world where people are concerned about single use straws, and Tim Horton cups invading the worlds oceans, a rather large 3 year old dishwasher is off to the dump. And then there are electric cars that are a few years old (5??) in otherwise perfect condition, where it isnt cost effective to replace the batteries.
