Who's to say what injuries he would have if he had on a helmet. He had facial injuries, so only a full face helmet would have protected that. So are regular 1/2 and 3/4 helmets a waste of time to wear then? There is also the chance of severe neck and spinal cord injuries from the weight of the helmet. Does it happen often? No. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't have happened here. There is no way to guess what his injuries would have been.

I also have lost many, many friends and Brothers in bike wrecks. Some were wearing helmets, some were not. A helmet is no guarantee.

As far as the 2 year waiting period, it makes perfect sense. The more experienced you are the less likely you are to have an accident. There is no arguing that fact. Just ask an insurance agent, thats why they have tiered rates.

Yes, I stand a greater chance of a head injury without one. But, by that logic if I never get off the couch I probably will never get hurt. People are injured and killed in all kinds of recreational activities. I wear a helmet when I skydive, I also wear one when I ride in the dirt. I am capable of determining risk and taking the appropriate precautions.

I would never dream to tell someone they couldn't wear a helmet, by the same token I would never dream of telling someone they had to. It is not my place to do so, nor is it for the government.

There is a reason Nascar drivers went to a full cover helmet,more protection so they can race another day. It doesn't matter how good a rider you are if a 62 year old woman in a New Yorker turns in front of you, if he had on a full cover helmet he would have knee injuries and some scrapes,not a poster child for dental appliances. I always wear a helmet on the street or in the dirt with my quad,of course at 47 I don't heal as easy as I used to! My step mom and sister are both EMT'S and they are the ones who have to scrape the brains up off the street to send to the Hospital, they both wear helmets on their bikes.

It's a shame the kids had to learn those safety precautions in such a terrible manner. I hope he pulls through from the accident. I hate to see a vivrant talented life cut short behind a single decision..

How about if the NFL made helmets optional? That would be interesting.
On the bike, you have to plan for the hit... but I don't like being told to.
What if all stairs are declared unsafe and the govt required you to wear a helmet whenever you went up and down the existing stairs, and curtailed the construction of houses or new construction to eliminate the hazard. I heard that more people are hurt on stairs than on bikes.
Ramble....Ramble.... Just don't like safetycrats telling me or legislating away the risks in life that make life worth living.
BTW, I always wear my helmet, but I have to.

There should never be any helmet laws, but I will always wear one. The government should keep its nose out of my business.

They did up until not that long ago. Hell, it's only been a few years since the last guys that were grandfathered on that rule have retired.
