You will have to get into the 13's to get me sucker!

I may drive tomorrow...thought the drive time was finished for the year...but maybe a couple of more days???

Much of the piston problem occurs in the separation wall between the ring lands. You can't coat that part of the piston. The dome is a problem due to its minimal depth, and ceramic coating would help a little.

But if you are going to drop the pan to pull the pistons, it is just not wise to not go with forged pistons and rods.

Roy

Prof, I assume your comment about pulling the pan to change rods/pistons is for doing the work from the bottom side/no need to pull the heads? If so do you know if that approach works on an '05 QC (clearance problems)? I'd like to go with forged pistons and rods and could do it quicker if top end disassembly isn't required.

Thanks,
oldguy

It is just my way...if I were going to put forged pistons in I would not do the job without also going with forged rods and improving the oiling to the main bearings...just seems to be a really short sighted approach to making an engine what it needs to be. Sure you can pull the heads and replace the pistons...just seems to be penny wise and pound foolish. If you want to modify an engine on the cheap you can choose a much better starting point than our engine...

Local 150 Operating engineers IUOE.
Roy I am already in the 12's:marchmellow: I was gonna take her out too looks like we have a few more days till snow. ALso your gonna have to pull the heads to get the pistons or rods out from the top, unless you guys found a way of slippin the rod and piston past your crank. I agree about completely forging if your building a beast like yours. But if your just replacing a bad part put in at manufactoring (ie pistons and rings) for staying below 700hp, then it may be more over kill.
But to each there own right.

That's cool, I'm out of boilermakers local 40. I was just in Whiting IN working at BP. You guys have a lot of work up there.

Yeah, my season is over mon and the fun begins. Yeah fixed a few machines at that bp. People who live in whiting get alot of money from bp, but if you seen the town you know why:marchmellow: The real work for me starts next week I get to tear the shit down and unfu*(* the nightmares from the previous so called mechanic:dontknow: :p Fisrt winter in 3years I will be working all year round. Kinda sucks gonna miss my 3month vacation:D

I'm with ya, looks like I may get the week before Xmas off. Then after the holidays back on the road. Oh well the wife loves the money!

You had to have made a good penny going to work in whiting. How long where you out there?

I don't think I worded my question well. On an '05 QC can I change the pistons and rods via oilpan removal without removing the heads?

Thanks,
