I put my original Bilstein shocks back on the truck today. I had the complete X-Metal 1/2 drop kit on it and it was really riding crappy, so I swapped out the shocks for my originals and really pleased with the results, it rides about 10 times better than it did. In all fairness to X-Metal the shocks had about 25,000 miles on them, so they were probably ready to be replaced anyway. I have heard other members say they had done this and were really happy with the difference. Now I probably need to replace the front springs with a set of Stinkers new springs.

I might give this a shot Jack...I have the same 1/2 kit and mine bottoms hard..

It made a BIG difference in mine, I had seen a post where Stinker said it would help a lot and not affect your lowering kit.

I run Stinkers 1/2" lowering kit with QA1s set at 10 and it's very bouncy around corners, like bobbing head stuff, more noticeable at slow city speeds around 90degree corners doing 5-10mph, it's like under steer with hop (if that makes sense). I don't think it's Tony's kit, with his stiffer springs it's not plausible, on paper. It's not a harsh ride, it's almost too soft and bouncy. I do have 45 series tires but I feel it's way more than the tire difference. I will try to get to the QA1s and adjust the settings and try 12 then perhaps come right back to 4-6 and see how that goes, maybe it's too stiff? Talking to Tony, he said the stock Bilstein shocks are way better in his opinion. I may go this route. What shocks came with Xmetal kit and are you able to describe why you think they are better, maybe you had the same bounce or ride as I'm having? :dontknow:

It was really bouncy, I think they are just not a good quality shock, much smaller than the Bilsteins. The QA1's are supposed to be the best, I have not tried them. With the fitment problems you had with them I don't think I would be very happy with them either.

the thing is with a 1/2 kit you dont need to change the bilsteins out:)

in my opinion the bilsteins are top of the line, they are gas charged and valved to fit our 10's.

the qa1's are adjustable, but for range of may applications, not specific to our trucks, and are really only good for racing, not for everyday driving.

the shocks that gary used were basically either a gabriel or monroe shock , at the most good for 20,000 miles , at the very most.

thats why I didnt even think of using any other shock than oem, they are top of the line, and when at a dealership I had taken ones off that had 80,000 miles on them and they still worked perfectly.

On carls note, i think a change from the qa1's back to the oem , would most likley take care of the problem, but too, he is running a taller tire that will give a different ride.

The springs I sell are not a huge difference from oem, they are jsut a tad stiffer so that under extreme bottoming conditions they shouldnt hit quit as hard as competitors,

I never have told this , but I guess its no matter now;) , but most of the competitors springs, which I had two tested, were undersprung, the rate was the same basic rate as a hemi truck, way too light for our engines.

not saying they are bad , jsut saying thats why some members had a problem of bottoming out in large dips on the road.

on one more note, and Carl this is not aimed at you bro, I have had a ton of people ask me this;)

If you take a bone stock truck, and take measurements they are unlevel on one side, most people dont ever notice it .

But when a person takes and lowers the truck then they pull out the tape measure;) and find that one side of the truck usually sits 1/4 to 1/2 inch lower on one side more than the other.

this is basically because of wieght, the fuel tank and driver is on the same side, so the weight is primarily concentrated on that side , causing unlevelness:D

sorry bout the spellin:p

But back to the point of the thread, if you have anything but the oem bilsteins on, takem off, try the oem shocks, you will most likely be amazed at the difference in ride:rock:

Mine set a full 1/2" lower on drivers side.I just cut my lowering blocks to allow for the difference and it sits the same at all four wheels wells now.

I am running the Ground Force set up with bilsteins and it is smooth as heck.

You changed yer shocks........

Now go change yer socks............ Phew............!! ;)

D

Before I dive into re-installing the stock shocks........any special thing that has to be done?...they will just bolt back in without any other mods or adjustments?......any parts I need to dig back out that were removed when Xmetal's kit was installed?....My dealer installed the lowering kit so I do not know what all was removed...

Nope, no changes, just put your Bilsteins back on.

Good question, is that the same for me and Stinkers 1/2" kit?
Will the stock shocks fit and run as designed or will the new height throw somethings out?

Like Fatjack says bro, they will fit right in sir, on the front you only loose 1.5 inches travel on the shock and the rear whatever size your blocks are

Thanks Stinker. :) I'm not too clued (lol), when you say "lose", what does that mean exactly? Do you just mean the shock won't use it's full travel capabiliites? Like if it "can" travel 5", now it only has to travel 3.5" due to the shorter travel of the lowering kit. Just curious and would like to learn what that means is all. Also, it's safe to run QA1s in the back, right? Like, Stock up front, QA1s in the rear. They seem to be OK back there. The adjustability is a nice thing to have for these trucks with traction and all.

Hey tony can you hit stretch up and see what lowering kit he wants. trying to get it out of him is not easy

yessir you are correct, the suspension is 1.5 lower so you loose 1.5 inches of travel.

and yes it would fine to run the QA1's out back
