My truck is very difficult to shift into reverse even when cold. I read some other threads about overheated fluid but mine has the problem even when first started. I have also noticed the truck is unshiftable when revved above 4500rpms. Does anyone know why this is? The truck is a 2004 RC with 10k miles. any help is much appreciated.

If you don't already, upgrade to Viper spec hydraulics; clutch slave cylinder and the clutch master cylinder. Get the kit from Roe Racing. I have trouble getting into reverse sometimes and I have all that done, but, an X-Metal Gen-X shifter. Gets lost somewhere between 5th and reverse, the never-regions lol. I feels like it's in, reverse lights come on and my reverse camera image displays, clutch it out and GRRRRIINNND  Every other gear, never missed it, nice crisp slots, just reverse but I don't give a shit because I don't drive in reverse all day lol + friends and work shops have told me the same while driving it. Upgrade the stock clutch hydraulics and while you're at it consider an aftermarket shifter to complete the package.

;)

there is a reverse solenoid lock-out on the trans, make sure its not unplugged. when its unplugged its very hard to get it in to reverse. are you having issues with any other gears?

I have issues while under high rpm. I like the factory shifter fine if it would work properly.
Under high rpm, the truck will NOT shift up.

You either have a clutch problem (the clutch is not releasing) or you have a severe tranny problem. The easiest way to find out which one it is to place the truck on level ground; put it in 1st gear, push the clutch to the floor ,and red line the motor. If the truck rolls forward you know your clutch is not disengaging properly, probly related to the stock master/slave setup.

Thank you! I'll try this afternoon. Did this stock setup ever work correctly? I know mine has been this way since I have owned the truck starting at 9k miles. I was just too excited to care before!

Stock clutch setup sucked from day one. Mine burned up at 3k miles. Changing out to the viper master/slave is a must. The stock shifter sucks also IMO. At WOT shifting into third was always challenging. Even downshifting was all guess work. Upgrading to an after market unit changed all that big time.

The stock shifter feels a bit rubbery but, I'd be happy just to get it shifting properly. How much is the Viper conversion?

Wow, the upgrade looks nice but also carries a nice price. Will the truck shift easily into reverse(normally) and also upshift fine under high rpm acceleration with this change only?

everything with these trucks carries a "Viper Tax"...best bet would be to replace with the viper parts like everyone else has said yes it's pricy but at the end of the day.. you know you get a better part than the factory put in it...also it might help to change the fluid i changed mine about 400 miles ago and it's shifts WAY better! so start small change the fulid out and if that make it a little better get the shifter and if all else fails break down and by the clutch kit!

EDIT- i love our venders to death but you can get a used slave cly out of a viper for pretty cheap... but your still have to buy the shims from roe!

My clutch setup is 100% original but I only have 700 miles on truck.
I've had no problems except for the 2nd to 3rd shifts.

At about 200 miles I swapped stock shifter for GenX shifter.
Best upgrade for the money.:)

Test your clutch first but it's probably gone or will be soon.:dontknow:
Do the clutch and the Viper upgrade together since it's apart.

A new shifter wouldn't hurt either!:D

The trans will shift much better with the upgrades...I dont know of anyone who wasnt very happy after installing them...that said, the answer to your question above is yes and no....if nothing is wrong with something else in the trans then yes, will shift better.........if there is another problem (reverse lockout unplugged, warped shafts, mis-aligned shifter, etc) then no, aint gonna help.

Thank you for all your help! I notice now after driving the truck and looking carefully at the pedal that it takes hold low on the floor. It is almost like the factory slave is not the correct part at all. I'll tinker with it soon and maybe even start a new thread. I had this problem with my Dart and the hydraulic clutch conversion and just went to a different type of slave. I used a slave on it from a Cummins Ram and it gave more throw. First off, I want to remove the old slave and make sure it isn't leaking. I'll be back.

do yourself a favor:

upgrade to viper master/slva hydraulics, a centerforce clutch, a b&m shifter & mobil 1 ATF in the transmission....... your current & future shifting problems will be gone. :)
