Disagreement: Let's enjoy it.....

I'll add just one more salient point to my (apparent) sililoquy:

Either my suspicions are correct regarding your reticence to engage the subject. Or no one here really comprehends the quintessential antipathy (profound difference) between religion and spirituality.....

That is not to say every single one........ But most everyone....

Peace..... out.

I love ya' alot Kris....

and I don't see what someone's vocabulary has to do with it.....

D

A few points, followed by a couple of questions....

First, regarding your quotes above:

Telling Kris you love him may have unexpected side effects....
Also, vocabulary has an intimidating effect of some people, and Kris is one of them (so am I :D )

Next, a few thoughts around why disagreements are incredibly tough, not only on the web, but on a great place like the VTCOA:

I really like your take on the subject....ie, we should be able to share our opinions, no matter how different, and be able to disagree without losing focus that people have different opinions.....they should be able to voice them, with passion, without every disagreement turning into a battle of my e-cock is bigger than yours  .......but that just isn't the real world....regardless of this site, or a couple of other forums that are overall great places to reside on the internet, I've found that sharing my opinions on the web is impossible without taking on a blanket of personal insults.....

So, I choose to interject here and there with a little humor as opposed to getting in a position of going through that type of negative scenario....I enjoy a good arguement and love someone with a great counterpoint, but invariably I get blasted with what I consider to be inappropriate and fiercely judgemental word battles.....and even though this is the internet, I don't feel the need to tolerate something on the web that I would not tolerate in person....

So, I keep it light :D Good topic, BTW, and thanks for reading....

Finally, did someone delete my previous post??? I swore I responded, but couldn't find a post after 13+ pages :dontknow:

Maybe this is why our young people have no values, morals, respect, or belief (in anything) -

It also makes me thankful I do not have cable if that is the crap you get to pay to see - Very sad indeed

Nothing personal against you Jake, you just shared the fact that crap like that exists

Thanks for participating in the discussion....... and the humor is welcome.;)

I have monitiored this thread closely and I haven't seen a post from you on this subject until now....

Thanks for the frank observation regarding the state of the union.... It actually helps us swerve back into the original topic of disagreement itself.... It seems that most people are very childish and insecure about disagreement. Whether it's because they have residual trauma from Mom and dad arguing or what... People confuse disagreement with disdain.

I'm not sure what happened to the intellectual genepool. But the inability of some human beings to debate without rancor is astounding to me....

The inability for human beings to admit that they really loathe Christians is not so hard to understand. No one wants to admit that they are so predjudiced against Christians and Jews that they are willing to deny them a basic right afford to all Americans under the Constitution...... Free Speech...

Woe be it unto them.....

Christians piss me off as much as anyone sometimes.... They can be exclusionist, arrogant, back biting elitist snobs.... Some are even racists (Aryan Brotherhood) and others are just plain hateful ...(God Hates gays).... Yes, some Christians have plenty to loathe and revile.

Conversely, some are good, caring and generously charitable people who embody the true spirit of Jesus Christ.....

It boils down to the simple fact the there's good and bad everywhere. And to say that all Christians are as bad as those dolts previously described is pure bigotry..... There are some very wonderful Christian people.... and they have a right to speak as much as you do.

OK, I'll say this....: If someone was to get on this forum and scream some fkd up shit like: "You are all stinking lousy sinners.... You should repent and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior or you'll burn in Hell's everlasting fire...."

Hey, I'd be the first one to tell 'em to STFU............

But to attempt staunch the flow of illumination that emanates from any of the great paths of spiritual pursuit is arrogant and wasteful of the time we have on earth.... Besides, if you have no penchant for spiritual stuff you can always amuse yourself elsewhere on the forum....

It's not for you, FINE..... Just read somewhere else.... or debate the idea/concept head-on..... But, openly responding to the mere mention of (specifically) Judeo-Christian terms is Unamerican, unconsitutional and just downright Fascistic.....

One more thing:

If big words intimidate you..... or if you think I use them as a means by which to keep you down...... All I can say is "grow the fk up"......;)

I believe that Jake, great guy that he is, is easily capable of withstanding the disagreement.....

I really appreciate Jake........ He is (in many respects) way beyond his years...

Thanks, Wifey for disagreeing so agreeably....

I have to say, given the subject of this thread and all, I am impressed that it has remained in the non-offensive section!

I think this speaks volumes of the maturity that we are all capable of, but don't always excercise!

:congrats::congrats:

You guys and gals are the BEST!!

Ok, I didn't really read much of the thread until after I made this post. Doesn't really change anything, but I noticed that it has come close more than a couple of times!:D:D:D

I know religion is a tough topic, but mostly because people are too closed-minded about it, whatever. My wife and I are of two very different religous backgrounds, but we do have disagreements from time to time about things having to do with the bible. (She knows it much better than I do, so I tread lightly!:D) My point? It is possible to disagree cordially, I'll admit it is a lot harder on the internet, but it's still possible. Like my wife and I, all you have to do is agree to disagree! It works beautifully, as long as both parties understand that it's not arguing for arguing's sake. You just both have a different view of the same subject. Right and wrong tend to matter less than just respecting each others opinions and views. Remember: Perception is everything!!! And anything and everything can and will change your perspective!

Keep an open mind and value each others differences, it's easy!!!

This is NOT a debate about religion............. Religion just happens to be a component of it....

This debate is about freedom of speech and bigotry.....

Well, some of us got it.For the rest, well, they have other things to read and respond to.No one should feel compelled to participate.I happen to be one who enjoys debate.Debate brings out the true character of the person or persons involved. If you are shallow and easily offended and think that the purpose of debate/disagreement /argument is to "win",then it will turn ugly.If ,on the other hand, you want to explore the thoughts/feelings/beliefs of others in an unfettered manner and express yours without fear of censure ,then this is the thread in which to do so.

While I do not always agree with Django, nor does he with me,we should have the opportunity to find out why we disagree. To disagree without becoming disagreeable.:D

I love ya' alot Kris.... But I couldn't disagree with you more.....

Disagreement may result in contempt in your mind... But please don't include me in any of it.....

Anyone who is incapable of loving someone within a disagreement demonstrates quite a talent for ignorance and unforgiveness..... and I don't see what someone's vocabulary has to do with it.....

D

Unfortunately you took that as an offense towards you. It was actually aimed at several people. A large vocabulary doesn't scare me. I was an AP English and History student and wanted to be an English Teacher when I was younger....(Still kind of do.)

Don't read too deep into who my post was directed at Tim. It was the point of a disagreement. To me the term Disagreement seems ugly but, the word Debate seems to be more appropriate here.

However, when somebody says they dont believe in God, Allah or whatever....does that mean you have to say you feel sorry for them? Or does it mean that they have chosen their path and whats good for one man may not be good for another? I dunno. Just my point of view and I still stand by what I posted last night.

It wasnt offensive I dont think nor did I mean it to be. I was "disagreeing" if you will.;)

And it does............

But on this thread my goal is disagreement within a civilized debate....

Some people.... in fact, many people are presently lacking in certain areas of debate and decorum, so they attempt to win the upper hand by any means neccesary.

I admit to being guilty of this myself. It's human nature....

But one of the primary purposes of this thread is the developement of our brains, our emotions and our debating skills.... After all, personal attacks may be satisfying to the ego, but they rarely (if ever) address the salient points of the discussion.

There are very few exceptions.....

The point of this exercise is to learn to make your point well without rancor.

Sure it's easy to fall back on Cicero's axiom of, "When in doubt abuse the plaintiff"..... and, if done skillfully this theory works in a court of law. But here.... well, that shit don't cut it......

I can eviscerate the other guy as effectively as anyone...... But it won't prove my point.......

This has ventured past the topic I had outlined.... But no one has the stones to cop to that anyway... So maybe we should move on....

Thanks for the participation....

D
