Our Conspicious Consumption...

We have a recycling program here in the Seattle area. We even pay more for our garbage because of it.

Last time I heard, 80%+ of the recycled items still end up going into a landfill. It's one of those feel good things. Really does not help.

whew....thank goodness..i thought they were going to crumble the system!:D

WHAT?!?! Were is the backup for this one? Article after article have shown the retreat of the glaciers and melting of the ice caps.

Take a listen:

Is all the melting of the polar ice caps due to humans? Maybe not, but we have contributed to it at some level.

My question to all the Al Gore types is have you reduced the size of your home or do you live in a huge house that sucks up more energy than necessary and needed way more natural resources to build in the first place? Do you have gas guzzlers or just economy cars? You can restore an old car and make way less of a carbon footprint than if you buy the latest and greatest economy car. Do you carpool to work or is it too inconvenient? Make sure that ALL of your actions are inviromentally friendly before you preach to the masses!

I live in a pretty small house and am looking into adding solar if I can, lots of trees. For those that don't know Al has a pretty large house but has a ton of solar panels and a wind turbine to generate most of the electricity needs for his house. I have two gas guzzlers, but have an order in for an electric car. I would love to see the stats on restoring an old car verses a newer efficent car. I do car pool when I go downtown for work. The slug line is a task but worth it.

I'm not preaching to anyone. Just stating a point that we should all do our best to lessen our stress on this great planet. Any little effort by everyone is cumulative.

It should mentioned that Gore only made those changes to his house after it was announced that his average energy bill was over $2000.00 a month.

Let's not quote a conservative blogger as a authority on anything other than his own views. Take a read on who he is, enough said. I discount most bloggers, every stupid ass behind a key board should not be listened to. Let's try to quote scientific resource.

The polar ice shelves are melting and slipping into the ocean, which will eventually raise sea levels if not reversed. What part of the earth is cooling? If you take a look at the projected global temps you will see that where it is supposed to be cold it is warming. There are many global images where they show the largest ice shelves in Antarctica going away into the ocean.

I speak after I read lots of differing scientific magazines. I just don't post up an uninformed view from a person that only wants to believe the people that talk to his points.

sorry.

Well he made those changes at least. Let's not criticize what some think his motivation is. He did it, much more than any of us can say.

Let's try to applaud his move to save energy. Something to aspire to if you ask me, not make fun of.

And do those "Scientific Magazines" lean left or right?

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23411799-7583,00.html

A very interesting Newsweek article from 1940, freaking out because the Earth was COOLING! .... It seems to be "any port in a storm" for scientist's that want to keep their grant money....

http://denisdutton.com/newsweek_coolingworld.pdf

all you have posted is what you have read....that doesnt make it factual. I have posted that NASA photos illustrasted the record refreezing of the ice caps and apparently the photos are wrong, but thats just NASA for ya. I cant speak for you, but I have done zero experiements on the climate, so technically I have zero supporting facts to support any of my claims. We can only take what the scientist say as factual. Yes we know something is happening with the climate, they say that humans are creating alot of the issues..do they know that as fact..i dont think they do. I do think there is alot of other motives driving all this environment bullshit, money being one of them. I think that its just the earth doing what it does. The earth will be here long after we are gone and it will be just fine. I know....but we want to make it a great and healthier place to live while we are on this earth for years to come...thats the egotistical logic of alot of people. Humans adapt, thats the great thing about us, we are one of the species that can adapt to change and make it work. What about the humans that cant adapt. They die. Only the strong survive. Part of the problem is that the world is over populated and it will only be a matter of time until there is a global killer. Alot of people neysay that too, but it will happen. It will be mother earths way taking care of herself. To many arrogant assholes trying to play god with the earth.

I read a lot of mags. Most unbiased scientists just interrupt the facts that stand up to scientific scrutiny.

The Bloomberg article has a lot of information that can be taken both ways.

I'm still reading the AU post but this publication has posted many article in the past that support the global warming views.

One thing to know about scientists is that their views need to stand up to scrutiny by all sides. Science is a very hard field to be in if you do not have a thick skin. Anyone that puts out a theory is held up to criticism from people that do not hold that view. The current prevailing opinion is that global warming is occurring. Yes you can find scientists that argue the opposition, but the vast majority understand and support the fact that global warming is happening. Just a decade ago the majority of scientists thought global warming was not happening. Now most support this view. This is an extremely complex issue, but most of the worlds scientists are stating that this is occurring. One fault in all the posts is the short term view of things. Who cares about climate changes over two years, we are talking about changes at a longer term.

If anyone can see the video of the ice shelves in Antarctica slipping away I'm not sure if you could not be concerned.

Take a read at this:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/26/poles.antarctica

If you took the time to research what I have posted over the last year or so you would see a lot of posts to very reputable resources. And very scientifically vetted articles about global warming and heat indexes.

Major ice shelves are going away. Any small buildup as reported by NASA is dwarfed by this. Yes I do read a lot, and after reading it all I make an informed opinion.

Yes mother earth will be here until the Sun burns it to a crisp, and humans are not the most long lived species to date. We have only been here for less than 1% of the time of the earth has been here but we have changed the environment more than any species before us.

I would agree that the world is over populated but who can look into a dying childs eyes and say it is survival of the fittest? What if the child was yours?

I guess I am an arrogant asshole, but I want to try to make this place better then when I came in. I guess I am a minority, but I will not be shouted down by poor science or politically driven policy.

Gentlemen...the point of this thread is to raise awareness...not to convince anyone that someone else is correct...

I got my interest raised when fishing for sailfish off Costa Rica and was amazed at the amount of trash in the water...it was just sickening. I really hope that each person will do a little to respect the earth and our environment. Maybe it is just using an ashtray rather than the shoulder of the road to deposit butts. The awareness will help...and maybe someone will reconsider their careless approach...on the other hand some will not take any action...and that is their choice.

It was Mexico Roy ;) :D Why should the water be any cleaner then the land :D :p

No wonder all of those people are trying migrate north to move to Arizona and California...the environmentalists have made those two states natural magnets for those living in less ideal conditions. It is your fault and Wifey has contributed to it by recycling rather than polluting. You two better get your act together or you will be overrun!:D

How are things sir?

They have been better my friend. However if you noticed all the protests that took place all over the country, never took place in Arizona :D Curious huh ;) :D Snipper tower diplomacy works :p

Just so you know Jeff, I have a problem with most politicians that tell us what we should do, and then exempt themselves from those laws that they pass.

Gore is no different. If his energy consumption had not been reported he would not have made the changes that he did. Like most politicians, he's a hypocrit of the worst kind in my opinion.

Now please do not take this as a personal attack, but it's hard to take what is said to serious as both of your vehicles are far from what most would consider green. This could once again be interperted as a do as I say, not as I do commentary.

Well I do love a good personal attack Mikey:) You can lick my sack, big boy:D I will admit I got a little carried away on this thread again. I might be a blow hard at times, but all i want to do is represent an alternate view that most do not think of. If I come across as a now it all I am sorry for that. I'm very passionate about things, my truck for one, and trying to give a better world to my kids. I know they are at odds and I try hard to make up for my digressions.

I hope all can forgive me for my passions, I got a little off base the other night and really did not mean to attack anyone.
