PICS!!! Toasted Spider Gears

Scrambler is correct.

The route to go is with Stinkers Rear End from DTS...there are six or eight of us that have it and to my knowledge there have been no failures.

You save weight, get the capability of going to 15 inch slicks if you wish, do away with the C clips, you get 35 spline axles that are huge, cyro'd gears and the Detroit locker, and you can choose what ratio you want.

My locker chirps when I turn corners...kind of cute!

Call Tony for the full Monty!

but the srt 10 still has the anti slip diff? plus the spyder gear feature, thank you scrambler 1 very informative:rock:

Limited slip differentials and lockers are not the same thing. A locker replaces the spider gears, eliminating the weak link. While a limited slip is better than nothing, driving with a heavy foot causes them to wear out pretty quickly. You'll find yourself spinning one tire more often. Manufactures don't offer a true locker because while they are extremely durable and perform very well on the track they have some different on road characteristics. You'll have increased tire wear due to slipping the inside tire making tight turns in parking lots or pulling out onto the street etc. Also you need to use more caution in the rain, especially when turning, it doesn't take much throttle to break the tires loose and start to skid. Personally I consider this to be GREAT fun :D but I understand how it can get less skilled (read average) drivers into trouble. A limited slip allows the vehicle to drive like a normal car unless you really punch it. At the track a limited slip can cause you to get sideways if the tires spin since they may or may not be receiving the same amount of power. NEVER EVER, EVER continue a burn out if only one tire spins, this is hell on the rearend and will cause spider gear death.

Like Prof and others have said, the ultimate answer is Stinker's complete axle replacement. You get the gearing of your choice, a real locker, and brakes that allow you to run a 15" rim and real slicks.

Pulled the carrier out tonight. Pulled the the side spiders they're weren't nearly as bad as the top and bottom ones, but scared up pretty bad. The clutches look pretty worn as well. I gonna have everything washed out tomorrow and I'll take some more pics of the damage.

Oh BTW I had forgotten to thank Mickey for all his help over the phone explaining on how to pull the rearend.

Thanks MICKEY!:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have a 4.56 gear set in great shape sitting in a box, :dontknow: if that means anything.. Just throwing that out there.

And I have an extra set of Wilwood Calipers... just throwing that out there too!

I would love to take them off your hands and this would be the best time to do the swap, but things are tight right now (I'm sure no one has heard that one before LOL). I wouldn't be able to get XO to conquer on that purchase, but thanks for offering.

Not to take away from stinkers axle upgrade, if I had money to spend u bet I already have it...But Nowwhats trucks had tons of passes into the 11's with the stock rear end even with shaved calipers on 16" rims with 33" slicks...
The one thing I learned from him and VPRPWR was Most guys blew their rear end or spiders gears by Doing a burnout and holding the brakes(ie get a line lock)...This could cause one wheel to hold completely over running the spider gears and burning out the clutches....I was lucky to learn this early on and only blew out the clutches,,,The technique I was taught was to tilt both mirror so i could see both tires while I burned out...I would glance from left to the tach to the right and repeat the other way,,,As far as breaking a c-clip, well if we had drum brakes then yeah it would be danger issue but the rear discbrake caliper mount will keep the axle from sliding out...

proper technique will allow your stock rear end to last a long time...Besides the dana 60 is no slouch at all..

Great thread with lots of good info. Sorry about your spiders dude.

I had always heard wheel hop was your spiders worst enemy. Caltracs took care of that problem for me.

Patrick,

It wasn't the wheel hop that killed them it was the 14.5 wide slicks (too much tire bite) for those puny girly man spider gears. So I ordered some from Ken (NBT) and had them cryoed. If those go then I guess I'll have to pony up for Stink's rearend. Oh, and I do have caltracs as well.

I was one of the few NA guys that broke the ring and pinion gears with the spiders. I was able to drive it back from the track having the rear end screaming loud. I had to get the complete gear assembly replaced including the spider gears.

The problem occurred after letting go of the brakes during a burnout after the rear end started hopping. I did not have a line lock, slicks, DR's, or Cal Tracks. I had over 200 passes at the track before it happened.

Other than what everybody else has suggested, I would add Cal Tracks to your list to help.

Dragracing a Manual trans car takes some serious thought about what you are doing to the driveline and how to minimize breakage.
Hi impact launches will Break the weakest link in the driveline.
The Dana 60 can take over 1000 hp BUT you need to apply it SMOOTHLY.
The way I Dragrace a Manual trans car is to engage the Line-Lok then very Lightly drag the clutch to take up ALL backlash in the ENTIRE driveline. This will prevent a Hi impact from breaking things.
I release the clutch qiuckly, I don't "side step" it.
This will prevent a Hi impact from breaking things.
This is how you can leave guickly with out beating the Hell out of the driveline.
Look at current Pro stock cars launching, they run the engine on the rev limiter but they set up the clutch to have a controlled amount of slip.
Yes they run Dana 60's too.
The Nostalgia Dragsters make over 2000 hp and many run the old 8 3/4 Chrysler rearend and they survive too.
My front engine nostalgia dragster runs the 8 3/4 too, but I'm running a supercharged Flathead Ford.( Old, Old School)
Just my 2 cents,
500H V10

We do not have the Dana 60's. We have what you call a Dana Super 60. I don't know what the exact difference is but the dealer that replaced mine (Thanks MoparConnection) called it a Dana Super 60 and said it was different from the Dana 60.

What Stinker said...

Also 35 spline axle shafts. A D60 from an older 3/4 or 1 ton truck will be 30 spline.
