I like to at least feel prepared for any situation that may arise.

May I suggest that you look into a concealed carry permit (assuming you don't already have one). Then get a small pocket pistol and keep it with you always. You can't always be prepared for every situation but it's comforting to know you can do a Denny Crane in some situations.
