I am ready to quit mentally. I just needed a push like the recent purchase of VnmPwrd (J.T.) truck.

The wife has smoked for 23 years and I have smoked for almost 20 years. We quit cold turkey last night. I used to smoke a pack a day and the wife 3/4 pack a day. This is really testing my will power and the wife is already showing off her fangs.

I don't think patches or slowing down is an option for us. Has anybody else quit cold turkey after a couple decades of smoking? If so what are your suggestions?

Please give us any ideas that will make this road a little less bumpy.

Thanks,
Brad

My dad quit cold turkey last year. That's the ONLY thing that's worked for him too. He's tried the gum, the patch and all that shit. CT was the only way. He said it wasn't the crave for nicotine, it was his elbow wanting to bend and take a draw off something. . .

Good luck Brad and Jayme, you guys can do it!!!!

I haven't tried to quit before because I knew I wasn't ready. I am ready now so thats a big plus. Nobody can tell you to quit you have to want to quit yourself. And if your mindset is at that point then the only way is cold turkey.

First...congratulations! You and your wife have undertaken a life altering change. Not just your life, but the lives of lots of others too.

It will be hard. Doing it together is helpful, very helpful.

I used bubble yum. Every where I would normally have cigarettes I put a huge box of bubble yum. Don't worry about weight gain! You can address that later and it is much easier to do than quitting smoking.

Habit cigarettes were the worst...every time the phone rang in the office I was looking for a smoke. Everytime someone came into the office I was looking for a smoke, but all I had was bubble yum!

The bottom line is that it may take several tries...every time you slip and have a smoke, just climb back on and start quitting again immediately. Every hour you go with out one is a victory...if you fail and have one...just jump right back in to the quitting mode. Don't give up because you are not perfect! None of us are.

We are here to help...type here...it will keep your fingers busy.

Thanks Prof for the support. We will need all the support we can get.

I smoked for 21 years 2 packs a day - quit cold turkey in Mar 1996 and never looked back -

then my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer in Aug '96 -after a routine presurgical chest x-ray showed it. She had no symptoms at the time - none, nada, ziltch - not even a cough. I saw the chest xray - her right lung was full of it and inoperable - already spread - she died in Oct '96 - She smoked for probably around 40 years then quit and 10 years later.... she had cancer. I never really thought of starting to smoke again but it I had, my Mom's horror would have squelched it!

I won't say cold turkey is easy, nor do I preach quitting since to be successful you really have to WANT to quit yourself - no one but you will convince you to quit, but if you can get through it - you will thank yourself later! I know I do.

Anyway, it worked for me

I don't need one but want one bad. I'm going to the car wash instead and then heading to film a wedding full of people that smoke. That is going to be tough will will get thru it.

I'm glad you made it. How many times did you fall back and have a cig?

Everyone will respond differently to different methods, some people put it down and never look back, others have a horrible time and never quite adjust. My mother quit cold turkey for one entire year, instead of getting easier with time she became increasingly miserable until she couldn't take it anymore and sadly began smoking again.

I smoked one pack a day and my approach was to wean myself off by taking away one cigarrette each month. After nineteen months I was down to one cig a day, after dinner. The only problem: That was twelve years ago, I still smoke one a day after dinner. One of these days I will go cold turkey, but like you said, you really have to want it.

It took me 6 or 8 tries...been off cigarettes for 20+ years...but am now smoking a cigar a week and loving it!

I have been able to really cut down on smoking by not smoking at home. The only time I smoke is when I am out. I had even quit that but the OL started again and it really makes it hard if someone is in the same house. Good luck.

Hell just withhold sex...she'll stop smoking in a big hurry!

And if you believe that....I have a SRT 10 that I will sell you for $65,000.

it has been just over 2 months for me. no patch.. just cold turkey. you can do it if you are mentally there.

I never smoked, but I used to chew tobacco. I did it for two years until my dentist said I was going to start losing teeth if I did not quit. My gums started to recede. I quit and haven't had any in 18 years.

Here is a good way to quit smoking. Every time you get the urge, have some kick you as hard as they can in the nuts. The urge will probably subside.

Stephen King wrote a neat story called "Quitters". Interesting read for those looking for more "out-of-the-box" thinking on ways to quit.

I was a smoker and I quit cold turkey. Hardest thing I ever did. I chewed alot of gum and tried to keep busy whenever the urge to smoke arose.

Certain things trigger the urge to smoke. Try to avoid things that you know make you want a cigarette. The rest is mostly a "habit" so try to find other things to do instead.

I won't lie IT ISN'T EASY!!! :(

You can do it!! Especially since you are doing it together :elefant: :elefant: :elefant:

Looks like eating and sex are out now  :dontknow: :p :p

Here is some support for Jayme - I see she was left out by Hammerhead ;) :p :p

i smoked 10 years, stopped for 17 years ....untill damned i smoked a cigare ( drunk ) and that became a habbit... there i found the nicotine drug again , and beginning my own business in 2000 i smoked again sigarettes....with the stress as a explanation.. i know , so easy to find a reason..... :banghead:

My wife smokes to , we tryed to stop together some times but did not succeed....You must be mentaly right convinced and some depression or stress brings those sig's so damned quick back....

But so many succeed , so why shouldn't you both can do it ?

my advice , for what it is, stay alert and determinated because once a smoker , always a smoker....amazing how our body recognize , even after 17 years , so quick the drug again ...
