I used to smoke two packs of Marlboro lights/day. Then I almost lost my life at the age of 27 to pneumonia. I was so sick that I lost over 30 pounds in one month. The fever was unbearable. I had hallucinations, and the pain (from the fever) made me actually want to die. The worst was when I was so weak, I couldn't even make it up the 13 steps in my house.
In the end, I sustained permanent damage to both lungs, with the worst scarring on my left lung. I still try sometimes to smoke, but I can't. If I even have 2 cigarettes in an evening of drinking, my chest feels like it's rotting from the inside out and I can't breathe.
So that's how I quit smoking. I was basically forced. My body can no longer handle it. It hurts me to smoke now, and it's no longer the least bit pleasurable.
