transmission rebuild

I need my transmission rebuilt,any advice? A local shop said they could rebuild it stock for $1600 or stock with a billet torque converter for $2400. Is this fair ,any anything else I should do?
 
I know rottenronnie has a guy he swears by. I assume he is in Canada. Search and I am sure you could find his thread

I don't think I can afford to ship a transmission to canada and back for a rebuild. What's the difference in an srt 10 48re rebuild and an diesel 48re? The local shop said he has rebuilt a lot of diesel 48 re's. The torque converter IS custom built by florida torque converter corp. In Cape coral fl.
 
You could check with Tony at JTS Venom. He has a guy who rebuilds transmissions and you would only have to ship to North Carolina.

Is your truck stock, or do you plan any mods? Ronnie went through several builds, with parts recommended by some very reputable US shops, and they blew up. Diesel's don't turn the rpm that we do for one. If Ronnie sees this thread he will fill you in on what works.

My truck is mostly stock ,maybe 30 hp over stock. I would like to run an 125 or 150 shot on it eventually.
 
What stall speed should I get?do I need a shift kit or valve body work?

26-2800 convertors are fun.

Shift-kits help as more line pressure is what is needed to keep the tranny alive.

Valve body work is semi-permanent so if you don't like it (say it's too harsh for your liking and your rear view mirror keeps snapping off of the windshield on a gear change), you are kinda-sorta stuck with it. Shift kits can be changed out, if needed.


If you are going to rebuild the transmission and you plan on future engine power increases, don't rebuild it with stock parts, that's kinda not worth doing.

Your 48RE (stock) is designed for 500-550 HP (maybe).
Stronger servos, clutch-packs, actuators, anchors, transducers, shift-kits and/or valve body mods, solenoids, drums, main-shafts and bands are available that will help keep it alive for a lot longer.

As the snow will be flying before too much longer up here in Canada I thought I'd provide a quick update to the 48RE build so far-

Nearly 30,000 km or 18,600 miles later: (This not might seem like a big deal but it's been rebuilt 10 times before by 4 different shops and I was getting 100 kilometers out of some of those!)

Several 1/4 mile passes with Drag Radials.
No band adjustments
No filter or fluid changes
Solid converter lockup (decent gas mileage)

Fluid is pink and the tranny shifts like the day it left the shop.

No drag radial runs but I have almost exactly 100,000 miles on my rebuild, after 3 previous rebuilds, and not a drop of fluid added or bands adjusted. Still slams gears and breaks the tires loose in second so all is well. :rock:

When I started the transmission adventure, I thought it would be straight forward but as mentioned, I went through several catastrophic failures before finding someone that knew what they were doing.

It's been quite the nightmare.

Commercial Powertrain in Balzac Alberta does a lot of 48RE diesels for trucks that make a lot more power than mine so he used the same build for mine.

It works well.

It's a treat when you find someone who can get these transmissions to work properly and live.

Originally, I thought that would be easy but it wasn't and I went through a few shops and several "repairs" until I found someone that knew how.

My brother owns a bunch of AAMCO stores , he has a builder that did a stellar job with mine. You would be looking at $2200 to $2400 with all new hard parts. Call Ian or Lewis Lakeland AAMCO FL for a quote.

Re; transmission fluid, are you using Amsoil Synthetic ATF? If not, what type?
