The only thing that closes gaps is contact between the piston and the plug, not compression. They tend to open because they burn away. The edges are usually rounded when this happens.jrgnd said:ok...just took the spark plugs out of my truck...After 4000 miles they look like they have been there for for 20000. the tip look's pretty burnt and worn. also boomer told me that the gap he set is 35 but all the plugs came out to at 40. I heard of pistons or compression closing gaps. never of anything that opens the gap...

Are there any small black specks on the porcelains of the plugs?
