OEM Air Intake System

You actually pick up a little mph if you spin off the line, i don't know why, it just does. Trainman, Raymond do either one of you run the top scoop on the volant? I think the issue here is a stock volant vs modded ones like yalls. Try the same mod on a stock box and i would bet money the results were similar.

Then why not just leave the scoop open to lower under hood temps as it was designed to do!!

The difference in engine temp withe the scoop blocked is not any higher than without it. Soi think the cooling effect if any is minimal at the very least

There are ways...to be smart with money...but since we're talking about the Volant.....I got mine used for a very low price....and the original poster of this thread bought his truck with the Volant already on....so it didn't cost him anything. Ray Webb gained 3 mph in the 1/4 mile, I have consistently ran faster than nearly every NA truck on this site.....even before I did any weight reduction, which shows it works for the two of us. You apparently don't have one, or have never tried one, have never posted a 1/4 time or speed to prove or disprove how bad the Volant is or how good whatever system you think is better. I have reported real world results hundreds of times on here with my times....and as of yet....nothing concrete from you. So show me the hard data....otherwise you're just offereing an opinion:dontknow:

I spent 10 years of my life chasing lower ETs ....spent enough money to pay for 2 houses..I didn't post 1/4 mile times then and won't now either, I have nothing to prove nor do I need the feeling of being better than anyone!!!!...I respect your need for speed but that don't matter to me anymore....and for the record, I turned every wrench. Any one can dish out the cash and run fast...men do it all by them selves!!

Ram Air / Cold Air......

The factory system for cold air feed works very well.

(1) The primary secret to "Ram Air" is to SLOW DOWN the cool air. By putting a "scoop" pushing air strait into the box defeats any amount of ram recovery. Air under high velocity has LOW volume.

(2) The size of the opening is NOT relevant to the ram air pressure produced. It is only relevant to the AMOUNT of air that will flow into the opening at that pressure. Ram pressure is dependent only on air density and speed.

The factory scoop (in the grill block off) takes the high velocity, low volume air and "recovers" pressure with volume by allowing the incomming air to the fender to expand and fill the "box". The filled box has higher volume and pressure than whats comming in via the grill scoop. Just think about hydrodynamics. You have all done it with a garden hose. Turn on the water full and let it flow into a barrel. Now take your thumb and patially block the end. You have more water velocity, but lower volume and thus the barrel will fill slower.

The engine then draws from the cool, positive "box" fender chamber. If you have ever looked closely at a removed fender, the factory guys put a sound deadend baffle mid fender to help determine "box" volume. This area, even though it is not completely sealed can achive pressure equal to ambient at speeds as low as 40 m.p.h. As a test, I will eventually install a pressure sensor from a ram-air motorcycle to help determine at what speeds the fender "box" area starts to produce (if any) positive (above ambient) pressures. I would not be suprised to see over ambient by 120 m.p.h. However, the huge benefits of the fender area filling with cool, charged air equal to ambient are realized at the engines intake hole before the filter.

However, Ramming air strait in would yield the opposite result. Cool air in... Yes. Additional volume or positive charge....No. See the Primary rule above.

Our hood scoop also has aerodynamic benefits. In addition to the engine bay heat escaping, it also minimizes the "Parachute Effect" of the airflow into the engine bay from between the grill block offs. This "vent" in our hoods has a three fold benefit... Evacuates heat, reduces drag and assists front end downforce from the splitter.

This is why I would not use a Volant or the Mopar CAI systems.

Cheers Guys!!

THIS!!!

I love my Volant....it acts like a NASCAR restrictor plate and slows me down enough to keep me legal and not have to install a roll bar for going to fast.:D
And I think I will stop posting my times....as it never helps anyone on this website....and I will stop spending money....except when I can only do the work myself ( right after my sex change ) How does this guy know so much about me, I don't remember ever meeting him.....Thanks for all the advice...I don't know how I ever made it this long by being so stupid....think of all the time I will save... not posting on the internet.....not going to the drag strip and wasting time and money for timeslips....WOW what a relief to not have to tell you guys what I'm doing with my truck....oh well, I have the Cadillac now and it feels faster:burnout::D I would be pretty bitter myself if I had spent enough for 2 houses and not had a timeslip worth posting....and for the record I haven't even spent 1/2 of the original price for the truck....probably somewhere near $10,000-12,000. My BBK was free, my ported intake was free, at least one set of M&H's were free....shame on me for reporting results....why can't I just keep my mouth shut......I'm wondering if anybody cares about my upcoming rebuild, oh ...wait... I have to go shop for a dress because I'm having someone else do most of the work...Greg Good head porting....JMB Justin custom intake manifold....ARH 1 7/8 race headers..... AC Performance forged rods and pistons......I'm such a sissy. And you know the sad part...I won't be using the Volant with the new sheet metal intake...we will be designing a custom air intake, sort of a dual ram air.....oh wait.....NOT a Ram Air....some where in the fender...or somewhere...maybe just above the radiator....there I go again with useless info.....sorry.

Met him a few times good guy old enough to be my pops so I show him respect. I don't throw the bitch word around a lot and I suggest you do the same
