Seized Caliper

dont know where you are getting rebuild kit for 10 bucks but if you can get them for that buy all you can get i priced them last year when i was having an issue and they where any where from 60 to 100 bucks for the rebuild kit. better off buying a remanned one. i am still looking into and seeing what i can come up with for an after market caliper since i have had this issue a couple of times already and would love to get rid of factory calipers so i dont have to rebuild them constantly.
i don't know so much that its a defect with the calipers as much as it is with moisture getting in the system.

Moisture by way of condensation I believe enters your calipers and creates surface rust on piston walls causing them in time to start sticking. JTSVP has wildwood brake fluid which is suppose to prevent or be more resistant of allowing moisture to develop on the brake system

I'm going to buy the repair kits from rock auto, I guess ill rebuild both fronts. $16 sounds a little cheap to me

If you're replacing the pistons then it is too cheap...For $16 all you're getting are the seals.

I paid $18 for the seal kits from my local parts store.

Pretty sure it's $16 per piston, there are 4 pistons per caliper. You need the seal kit on top of that.

My 10 is my dd, I should be able to do this in a day, right? Do I have to replace all pistons? Or maybe just clean everything up? New to this brake rebuilding. Debating on getting the semi loaded at rock auto so I don't have to deal with any setbacks.

You can do it in an hour including painting. Two hours letting paint dry ;)
I would just put new seals and pistons in it. Very seldom are there cylinder issues in the caliper.

Yes you can do it in a day. I would plan on replacing the pistons, but you can rebuild them with cleaned pistons (last resort). I had to reuse two pistons on one caliper because the dealership didn't have another two and I need it fixed that day.

I had to use an air compressor to get the pistons out of the housings. Also keep in mind you'll have to bleed/service the brake system after doing the rebuild. I picked up a Motive power fill pump that makes it easy, fast, and a one man job. Some prefer the Mityvac.

Ordered parts for rebuilding 2 front calipers, hoping to do this in a week or two. I'll start a new thread when I start the project.

Definitely not a hard task. This was the first issue I had with my truck. I ended up parking it for a few minutes and then going in reverse to get the caliper to unfreeze which worked. It didn't lock up again but I put new seals and pistons on order. I took my time and I believe the install took all of an hour or so.

doing good, just creeping.....It looks like your truck is doing awesome! Hows everything else with you?

Good. Man. Just got orders for ga. Headed there in aug.

thats cool man, where about you headed to? Ive been in Va since 12 and will more than likely be staying here for a good bit. I love it in VA but GA was nice.

My rear brakes have been screeching badly the last few weeks, had a look at them yesterday evening on a mates lift.

When I took off the wheels to examine the brakes the pads and discs are fine but the p/s caliper was sticking. I got a loan of a caliper piston rewind tool last night and tried to wind in the piston while the caliper was still on the car, it was firmly seized. We managed to squeese it in maybe a couple of mil but i reckon it wont last long until its seized again.

Is a new caliper the only sensible option or could it be wound back with a bit more force in a vice maybe? Are the calipers the same as a standard mk 5 or different for the GTi?

Anyone have this trouble with a GTi before?

did you loosen the bleeder screw ? the fluid needs somewhere to go and it will also flush out the old fluid.

You mean to post on a VW site??
Ours you can rebuild with new pistons and seals. Not sure about a Golf, lol

I consider, that you are not right. I am assured. Let's discuss Stewart
