Powerlifting

PL'ing just sort of evolved from regular old weight lifting. When I started in the gym, I just wanted to get bigger. Over time, getting stronger became just as important as size. I still have my workout logs from when my goals were to "max bench 225" and I thought deadlifting 315 was impossible. In other words, I'm not naturally good at PLing. lol.

What's a BP comp?

For anyone that is interested in starting PLing, I would:
1. join the VTCOA and post in this thread :D
2. get a copy of Starting Strength and follow it's protocols for as long as possible
3. go to google and search for powerlifting events near you

I would not get hung up on the politics of powerlifting, different federations, or gear. Just lift, enjoy the ride, take lots of video, and compete wherever you can.

starting strength and 5/3/1 are great for beginners.

I would also like to add, not just for beginners, to leave the ego at the door. Just last night I saw some kid trying to pull way more than he could handle and did the dreaded "bounce" with a hunched over back and still didnt get it up.

You cant make gains if youre hurt

My lifts in HS were 425/295/455 in the 168 lb class, raw. Now I am at 205, and haven't maxed out since 2010, and herniated 2 disks in 2011. I have been weary of DL since.

BP, is just Bench Press. The base usually hosts a small BP comp every year.

Step 1. Complete
Step 2. On it
Step 3. Googling now!

Your high-school numbers are solid. Were those in competition? I herniated a disc in May 2013. It got so bad that I couldn't even sit down without severe pain. Driving to work was the worst part of the day. Lol. So I actually couldn't workout for all of last fall or winter. When I started back in the gym, I could barely bench 185. Thankfully, strength comes back fast. Don't fear the deadlift or squat, just fear doing them incorrectly.

Great advice.

Great advice.

Yeah those were at the State Championship, but I haven't done a competition DL or Squat since then. Yeah I feel you. I re-injured mine a week and a half ago, so I am back on Prednazone and muscle relaxers. Looking forward to more injections in the near future. The bad thing about that, is it doesn't hurt... so I go work out... then when the drugs wear off I immediately regret that decision. Yeah, sitting or driving is terrible... and lord help you have to sneeze. Seizes my shit up like no other.

Great advice.

I should have followed my own advice better. Pinched a nerve in my back warming up on deads last week.

I went to the chiro and he did some x-rays and said the underlying cause was my spine being twisted, causing my pelvis to be rotated and putting more pressure on one leg than the other and not having the ROM as the other leg.

It already feels better, but I'm gonna wait till I've been adjusted and the spine issue is corrected before I deadlift or squat heavy

I slipped a disc doing some rep work last Thursday in Texas. I had already warmed up, worked my way up to a decent single, and was just trying to get some extra work in. I felt is slip on rep 4. I've been limping around ever since. The powerlifting thing is starting to piss me off as far as injuries go. lol

I have a new training plan that I am going to start (thanks again, Jeremy!), as soon as I am healed up.

Hmmmm.... I don't remember any crazy heavy single rep work in that program. :deal:

My girlfriend has taken an interest in lifting heavy these past few months. Just got a solid double with 185!!

Meanwhile, I hit a triple with 455. Making gains!!

Bench? :dontknow:

Still good. 455 for a triple should land you a pretty solid 500lb single!

I hope so. That was my goal for this bulk!!

I started doing paused reps and they have helped my squat a ton with depth and power coming out of the whole

You get video? All PR's should be caught on video. lol.

I spent 5 days in the hospital in December. Doctors said I should be dead. No heavy lifting for at least a year.

I sprained my ankle middle of November. They talked about operating, but decided to let it try and heal on it's own. My calf started to hurt not long after that. I had an ultrasound done to check for clotting, but they couldn't find anything. A few weeks later, while traveling, I experienced what I thought was a heart attack. Honestly thought I was going to die. Even had a real conversation with God. A week later, while traveling in a different state, and my leg swelled up and turned purple. My calf looked like a purple basketball. Anyway, I drove back to Colorado, hit the ER, and low and behold, I had deep vein thrombosis that ran from my ankle to my hip and severe pulmonary embolisms. Spent the next 5 days in the hospital. Doctors said they aren't sure how I lived.

Holy crap bro, well I'm glad to here your doing better! Thats scary stuff. I assume you're on blood thinners now? So did the ankle have any direct or indirect cause to this?

I have a great picture of Chris from that experience.

Yep, blood thinners and limited activity. The ankle was the direct cause.
