Well, I've got to get cash flow going again, my company had us shut down for the holidays. If you still have the cam for sale at the end of the month, or beginning of Feb, I'll buy it.

Sure, no rush at all; it's been sitting in a toolbox in a heated garage and it's anxious to get back to work.

What color are your head gaskets??
(look along the bottom edge of either head).

I have no idea, but will look. What's the difference in color? 6speedquadcab has a set of pushrods for sale. Would these work? I'm leaning on buying the cam, so if you don't mind, recommend brand name and P/N for everything I'd need. I'm savvy with basic engine rebuild, but when it comes to performance upgrades, I'm clueless. PM is cool if you want.

They will be either Black OR Gold.

A parts change in 2008 and the black O. E
    M. head gaskets were no longer available.

IF yours are still black, the engine has very likely never been opened up (heads off) unless it was 12 or so years ago. The newer gold gaskets will give you a bump in compression as they are thinner.

For example: 10.0:1 with the old gaskets will be around 10.35:1 with new.

    That's a good thing. :)

    Hello AMS3-

I have no idea what your performance plan is.

MANY questions I'd be asking prior to even attempting to provide you with a parts list. Some of which are:

How many miles are on your truck?,
What kind of maintenance has it had?
    Any prior mods?
Has the engine been apart and if so how many times? For example, after 3 pulls, the head bolts should ALL be replaced. If this is the first time (black head gaskets), your head bolts should still be good to re-use.
Does it have good leak-down numbers? In other words, is it ready for an increase in power or are you dealing with something that needs rings soon, a valve job, valve seals, etc? This IS something I would do if the vehicle was here.
Are your plug wires still in good shape? NOW would be the time to change them if they are old.
Does it need a new timing chain set?
Are you even thinking about porting the heads? (NOW would be the time).
What kind of power increases are you expecting?
Any thoughts to forced induction down the road?
What about nitrous, if so, cam choice and ring end-gaps become very important.
What kind of budget do you have?
What kind of exhaust system do you have?
    Is idle quality a concern?
Are emissions a concern in your locale?

There are even more questions that I don't expect answers to, but to do it properly, should be considered.

At the very least, you will need head gaskets from a dealer, oil (for an oil change) and coolant.

The pushrods for sale should be fine, contact the seller for more info.

I would definitely get a tune from your Tuner of choice.
Torrie has a good rep on here and is likely the go-to Tuner for these trucks.
Chris Jensen is notoriously hard to get in touch with.
Either of these guys can provide you with a tune for what (I think) your plan is.

Not trying to be a buzz-kill but I don't like anyone to walk into this stuff, uninformed.

    Ronnie

Not sure what the head gasket color means, I'll have to look. 6Speed is selling pushrods, would those be good for what im looking for? Forgive my ignorance, I understand basic engine rebuild, but not performance. As for springs, rockers, gaskets, timing chain and gears, what brands do you recommend. I'm looking at B&B long tube 3" headers, with straight pipes. I want the torque, not the hp at top end. From what you mentioned, the cam is all about torque. There will be no nitros set up, just raw power. Yes, I'm interested in idle lope, and no, emissions is not a problem in my state. No cats, and just resonators for the exhaust.
The truck has 74K on it, doesn't burn oil. I'm all go for porting the heads.

If you look in the pic below, you will see the edge of the head gasket is gold. If yours are black, chances are your heads have never been off. Also, straight pipes on these engines don't sound very good. If you are going with B&B, buy the whole system.

Your timing chain set was made by Lamborghini. You should be just fine replacing the chain only. Back in the day, the sprockets and chains were changed as a set. Modern oils changed that. Besides, you need a D9 cat to get the bottom sprocket off. I'd by the chain from your dealer. They are good. Same for your head gaskets (from a mopar dealer). The push rods from. 6speed should be fine.
Springs, rockers, etc from a place like Summitt Racing (or Comp Cams).
If someone is porting the heads, he can also setup your valvetrain. I like B&B longtubes. Their 1-3/4" tubes are best for street use.

Yes, straight pipes on an engine that fires every 72 degrees (Viper) instead of every 90 degrees like a V-8, sounds bad enough to turn off the **"Guys with the Oriental Cars" with coffee-can sized exhaust.

Straight Pipes= NO benefit to power production.
No Cats= Obnoxious Odors (Ask OLDCOLT)

**I don't know if that is politically correct and I don't care. :)

OLDCOLT: I can't see your head gaskets because your hood is shut.

These “gold” head gaskets you speak of, are they the ones that I seen advertised on a vendors site as having bigger holes designed in them so in the future you could change the lifters without pulling the heads?

And that’s good to know about the bottom timing gear, wouldn’t think that it’d be that hard to remove with the proper puller.

All the info Ronnie is asking about is very important to make your build go smoother the first time around. Having a check list and verifying all the parts (and tools) required with make things go quicker.

Speaking of really bad sounding exhaust.....this was from a dyno day that Ronnie and I hosted a few years back.

    Hello...

The original factory-installed head gaskets for the Gen III Viper engine were black in colour. (Canadian Spelling) :)

They were replaced in 2008 with the Gold-Coloured Head Gaskets by Chrysler.
If you went to the parts department today (or anytime since 2008) and asked for head gaskets for a Gen III Viper engine, you would receive head gaskets that are gold-coloured, thinner than the black ones and as such, provide an increase in compression.

I blame OLDCOLT for ALL of the confusion !!! :) :)

For the first 1/2 of that video, it sounded like a Cessna Taxiing.

The last 1/2 of the video when the truck goes WOT sounds nearly decent on the video.

In person, however it was an auditory experience that you would not want to repeat anytime during your remaining lifespan on planet Earth.

    (Just my opinion). ;)
