2005 QC Transmission Slipping

I just re-read some of your info.

IF the cable is too tight it will delay the part-throttle shift then shift "harder than normal" when it finally does. If its too loose, line-pressure will drop and your shifts will slip and slide.

"The transmission is flaring, not slipping". Hmmmm- Actually the transmission IS slipping, it's the engine that's "flaring" during the shift because the transmission is no longer propelling the truck forward even under slight engine load.

So in normal driving the tranny is taking longer to shift into the next gear, and it is a rough gear change. Example is when taking off from a stop, 1st into 2nd takes until 3000 rpms and same for 2nd. 3rd and 4th are smooth. Now on the contrary, 1st gear under full throttle sticks whereas 2nd gear slips and goes into 3rd

Sounds like your kickdown cable is adjusted too tight then.
IF there are other problems (as mentioned), the cable adjustment won't fix worn out clutches or band.

Hopefully though, the cable adjustment will return things to normal.
Did you get a chance to check the fluid odor??

Just checked the fluids, smells normal as the one I tested at the shop earlier. Good sign of things. I will work on the cable and keep you updated on the progress

That's good news.
The cable adjustment can be quite touchy.
Again, you want it to move AS SOON AS the throttle cable moves.

Good luck!

Loosen it right off then sneak up on the adjustment until the throttle and kickdown move together.

I live in Northern California. I will definitely go around and try to get more information before trying the conversion route. That would a another pain in getting necessary parts. If retooling this one can get the job tune easier for me. Is yours still 4 speed?
What part of North Cali? I lived the first 17 years of my life in Calaveras county about 5 - 6 miles from Big Trees State Park.

Giid morning Gill-

One other item to check before considering spending money. There is an external spring on the transmission that holds the kickdown lever forward. Make sure it is still hooked up.

Cheers

Manteca, close to Stockton. About an hours drive from Calaveras County

That's the cable for your cruise control.
The kickdown cable is the lowest one.

Ok, adjusted that cable. Marked where it was and brought it in about quarter inch, clipped it back up.

Huge difference in shifting, I'd say 1st to 2nd now shifting 1200-1300 RPMs, 2nd shifting to 3rd around 1900. Drove it around the block normally and then took to the highway. Man oh man, the cable adjustment really worked. Hasn't slipped from 2nd yet, took a couple videos:

Hey, that's great to hear and free!

IF it is not allowing wide open throttle upshifts, the cable is likely a little too tight.

You are likely finding out how touchy that adjustment is. :)

My folks live in Mt. Ranch, ever heard of it? I haven't been home since 1999, need to get out that way. After the lockdown of course. Stay safe my friend, and hope you get the tranny issue fixed soon. These trucks are a blast to drive :) My truck is identical in color as yours. Only differences are I have the bed mounted spoiler, no hard cover, and my front lower grill is different. Oh, and my paint job is horrible due to the sun. Your's looks pristine, must have been kept under a carport or something.

Nice looking truck you have there Gill!

Be patient with that kickdown adjustment, there is a sweet spot that will allow it to shift at wide open throttle (without lifting your foot) and provide solid part-throttle/light-throttle shifting as well.

You will find it. :)

Literally, 1/8" can make the difference.

Have fun with your rig.

Yes, I went hiking around there 3 weeks back. Nice country out there, cool and surrounded by the woods.

This was the original owner I purchased from, had it garaged with a cover. Interior is spot on too. I paid 25, little pricey but more affordable than the viper :D. This is in addition to my widebody hellcat, so makes for a nice garage.

Thank you for the help, I honestly wasn't sure if I'd get a reply but really happy from the support on here. I was looking up posts from early 2000's thinking that's all we could get. I will tinker with it a little at a time, working 6 days this week so need the snooze first. I really appreciate that quick help, got this thing working. Now to show the boys at work tonight

I'm going to drive around a couple more days and see how it responds. Might dial back just a bit, but so far so good.View attachment 63855 View attachment 63856
Nice truck Gill Welcome aboard. This is a good place to get info and share fun stuff and brag pics etc
You need more exhausts lol and the steering wheels on the wrong sideo_O:eek:

Spent quite a bit of time in Cal back in 01, 02 we were driving trucks. We used to drop wine barrels off in Northern Cal, Manteca, Napa, then pick up produce, mainly Salinas area
Great memories, long time ago now
