Oil - Which one to use - And Oil Pressure

One other thing, Joe Gibbs oil has a high Zinc content which is a crutial piece of the puzzle for lube when the oil is warm and under load.

In fact, the ingredient is ZDDP, or zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (say that 5 times fast), and it is the primary anti-wear ingredient in passenger car motor oils. ZDDP doesn't like catalytic converters, however, and the current API classification SM ILSAC GF-4 oils average 800ppm ZDDP (when the Gen I Viper came out in 1992, SG oils averaged 1200ppm). Chrysler switched in 2005 to 0W-40 Mobil 1, which is a European formulation for passenger car diesels (no catalytic converters) and does not meet API SM. It contains 1000ppm ZDDP; Mobil 1 15W-50 contains 1200ppm, if I remember correctly.

Heres a good read on lubricant clashing from initial build lube, to break in, to final oil used when talking about using a "fast burn" ZDDP.

I am also a Joe Gibbs Racing oil user,I'm running the 15w50 XP6. My builder was also telling me about guys using all these other synthetic oils(mobil 1,valvoline,castol,etc...),taking out cams all the time racing and after switching to the Joe Gibbs oil the same guys with the same builds are getting 2 yrs+ and still going on the same cam after switching to the Joe Gibbs oil, that tells me that there's something a little better in the Joe Gibbs oil.

I also run Gibbs xp6 but don't tell anybody. It's not street legal in the States. I run around 80 to 90 psi when hot and running and around 50psi at idle.

15-50 mobile 1 ,most of year including many 115 degree days , 0-40 mobile one the coldest winter months Dec. to Mar. I always let oil temp get to 150 deg before hammering it. You would be surprised how much pressure is on an oil pump with cold oil. I primed my new engine in my 454 with a good sized 1/2 inch drill and was surprised at the torque it took to spin it. It really bogged the electric drill down. since that day quite a few years ago, I always let the engine get up to temp.

Depending on oil temperature gives you the weight you want. Do some reading on this site, there is lots of good information. Currently I am running the BR-30 until the motor is broke in.
from what i've read in this thread, should i consider 15w50 over my 0w40 since i drag race my truck?? :dontknow:

Hey Guys;

I would like to add an alternative to this disscussion.

I FIRMLY believe in Mobil 1 15w50 Syn. I have used it in my sportbikes for over a decade with excellent results. I have concidered it for my RC. However, since it is still under factory warrenty, I did a little research.

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_Turbo_Diesel_Truck_5W-40.asp (Note the applications list).

This oil has maintained excellent pressures out here in the Arizona heat w/o parasitic losses from too high of viscosity, has quick flow at start up & has an excellent additive package!

Looks like the best of both worlds.

Has anyone besides "Ramchargerguy" used this?

I'm using it, but this is only the first time I've changed my oil since I've owned it. Was changed by the dealer when I bought it in October 09 and I just changed it about 2 months back.

Also I want to touch a little more on the PSI, I'm idle at 45ish and driving psi is 65ish. From what I've noticed, due to the mod list everyone includes, that the guys with more mods are pushing higher psi. Also I've read on here that if you switch to the "Viper" oil filter this can affect your psi... To lower it if I recall correctly, so for you guys running more mods this may be worth looking into if you want to bring your psi down just a smidge...

You know, Mobil makes a 4stroke 10w40 that is AMAZING!:elefant: I had an 03 GSXR1k and blew a rod bearing doing a standup. Though I heard a wierd noise... So about a week later, I broke my engine down and when I took one of the rod ends off, there it lay, perfectly in puzzle orriginal formation.

It turned the half piece rod bearings into about 7 or so pieces each, but Amazingly they stayed locked in place next to each other... So I bought new rods, bearings and had my crank true/welded and put her back together and added another 15k to it with no problems when I sold it.

I bought he 5w50 to try cause it was on sale, but when I had bought the truck 2 years ago I did alot of research mostly in the viper car sites because that's the only spot I could find the info, they said that the mobil 5w40 diesel has additives that the gasoline engine oils don't have plus the extra antiwear additives also. I buy whichever is on sale at the time I'm going to do an oilchange I usually do only 1 a year cause I don't drive it much.
