The Stop Smoking Thread

I have never smoked (have been working in the area of cancer treatment and research since I was 15). However, I am on the border of hitting the magic number of 25 for a BMI (>25 is over weight), so I have created the old "carrot & stick" approach. I have signed a contract to loose 1 lb a week for 15 weeks, for every week that I hit my goal $75 goes into a "mod jar", if I miss my weekly goal, $75 goes into an IRA account that I will not see until I am 65. So at the end of 15 weeks I could have $1125 to go towards mods, and be a lot healthier. I have also committed that once I reach my target weight, that I will pay $500 to the IRA if I put on 5lbs.

You could do something similar with trying to quit. Every time you get a craving, put $1 into the jar, at the end of the week if you have not smoked, put the cost of 7 packs of cigs (if you smoked about a pack a day) into the jar, at the end of the month splurge on something you want. If you do smoke, donate the money in the jar to charity that day and start over.

Congrats!!

If you have the "laser" stop smoking centers near you look into them!! About $300 per person to do it. I didn't want to quit wife dragged me kicking and screaming face down up the stairs to the clinic. Whaddya know the damn thing worked 3+months smoke free 28 Years 2 packs a day. And I have had a few cigars (not inhaled) in that time and still not picked up the smokes except 1 cheater butt about 2 weeks in but that was instead of the hammer to the wifes noodle ;-) it wasn't really easy for her but for me hell yeah! And now my new Snake will never be polluted!

I wish you guys the best of luck.

Sounds like a good idea however I've already got my prize to quit smoking. That prize is the 06 Ram Srt10 RC. If I can't quit I'll have to sell the truck. So far so good. Over 60 hours cig free without any slipups.:D

Right on!!!!!

Maybe the selling the truck idea should change to a bigger punishment if you don't quit ----you must give the truck to someone on the VTCOA.com site with a clean ,no Lien title....

I am ready to quit mentally. I just needed a push like the recent purchase of VnmPwrd (J.T.) truck.

The wife has smoked for 23 years and I have smoked for almost 20 years. We quit cold turkey last night.

This is a big deal. I'm pullin' for ya.

5 days clean and had to be strong again today with a strong urge out of nowhere.
keep it up!

stop smoking to the rest of you.

You may always want to smoke cigarettes, no matter how long it's been since you smoked.

The strength of your desire NOT to smoke needs to be greater than your urges to smoke. Urges come in waves based on the adversities of day to day, moment by moment occurances.

Ya' just have to stick to your guns.... The cigarette is the enemy....

If ya gotta, just smoke a cigar....At least you don't inhale..... Or do you?

A friend of mine (I'll let him post up if he chooses) just uit as well. Hypnosis did the trick for him.

I am at war with myself and am winning the everyday battles but am really concerned about winning the war. This has tested my will power to no end. I feel like I can't loose this battle because I gave my word to my family I would quit. Talking about this really helps as well. Thanks for all the support.

keep going brad, remember the first 21 days are the worst. after 21 days nicotine has left your body, it'll be downhill from there... you both can do it.

It all boils down to will power..... But sometimes a good point of focus is a great asset...

In your case it's keeping your promise to your family. If that is your passionate point of focus.....that you absolutely MUST keep that promise... and if you see the cigarette as the evil influence which is trying to make you break your promise..... Then you will win....

Remember that you are building muscles (will power) .... And each successful day makes your muscles bigger... Each day the influence of the cigarette weakens as your (will power) muscles get bigger and stronger..... Say that to yourself.... "With each passing day, I get stronger but the cigarette gets weaker"...... Keep telling yourself that......

You will win this fight......

Congratulations!
I have never smoked, so I can only guess at the struggle you are going through. I just read this thread, and I see lots of good advice. A friend of mine quite cold turkey years ago, and he used positive thinking.
A lot of the ideas here are based on negative re-enforcement. What you may want to consider is positive re-enforcement. Think of all the reasons to quit, but phrase them in positive terms.

Examples: My clothes will not stink = My clothes will smell fresh
My fingernails will not be yellow = My fingers will be natural

Make your list, and by all means keep the promise to your family in there. Just be sure to word your motivation in positive terms.
You are not trying to quit. You already did that. You are a non smoaker now. Now you are staying a non smoker.

Congratulations on joining the non smokers club.
