I have never smoked (have been working in the area of cancer treatment and research since I was 15). However, I am on the border of hitting the magic number of 25 for a BMI (>25 is over weight), so I have created the old "carrot & stick" approach. I have signed a contract to loose 1 lb a week for 15 weeks, for every week that I hit my goal $75 goes into a "mod jar", if I miss my weekly goal, $75 goes into an IRA account that I will not see until I am 65. So at the end of 15 weeks I could have $1125 to go towards mods, and be a lot healthier. I have also committed that once I reach my target weight, that I will pay $500 to the IRA if I put on 5lbs.
You could do something similar with trying to quit. Every time you get a craving, put $1 into the jar, at the end of the week if you have not smoked, put the cost of 7 packs of cigs (if you smoked about a pack a day) into the jar, at the end of the month splurge on something you want. If you do smoke, donate the money in the jar to charity that day and start over.
