4.88 install

Friday Upadate

Friday Update:

Called Devin at Unitrax and he confirmed that pinion bearings were included but carrier bearings were not. I had a very good conversation with him about the whole deal and felt like I learned some more about how it all works.

Called my dealer at 11;30 for an update, truck still not ready so I told him that the tech can call Unitrax if he needs any help on the shims which is what the problem was.

I drove over to the dealer late in the day...........the truck was still on the lift and no more closer to completion than on Weds!!!:( :( :( Spoke to the tech and he showed me what was going on and again I mentioned he could call Unitrax if he had any questions about the install. I did this very carefully not wanting to offend him. He was very cool but is stumped on why it wont fit. He said he did the calculations but when he puts the carrier together with the shims etc....he says its too big and wont fit or something?:dontknow: :dontknow: He mentioned that he has done many of gear changes but this one is different:( :( ....great!!!

I then tell him that I really want it done correctly the first time, so how ever long it takes, it takes. He couldnt even confirm that it would be done on Monday (they are closed on weekends).

So now I have no truck this weekend!  That sucks!!

Moral of the story......be thankful when you have experts in your backyard whom can work on your truck......ie Roe, Boomer, DC and Unitrax(for gear installs).

Yeah I know Hamr, I will just order the new one too!!! I always seem to want the best!!

peace

Good grief, man! I would have had to make some comment about it took a LOT less time to build the whole damn truck than he's taking changing the gears...of course, I have a way of really winning people over...LOL!!!

Yeah nothing like pissing the people off whom are working on your truck!!!

Getting mad isnt gonna do any good. I really just want it done correctly the first time. It is what it is.

I understand and agree 100%, but at this point I'd be worried he's gonna be able to do it right if he can't even make it fit...

Hense the reason for my apprehensive feelings right now.:(

They have already blamed my parts for the reasons for the delay. ie, your parts didnt include carrier bearings and races......its too big....its not stock, shims arent spacing like they should etc....

What I need is somebody whom knows this shit to go in there with me and get to the root of the problem. I dont even know what the proper questions are to ask.

I just want it done correctly.

patrick

Sorry to hear about your troubles dude, but sometimes it would be best to ask someone with more knowledge about the upgrade (Unitrax, Roe..) just to be on the safe side. Hopefully they can get the issue resolved.

What we ALL need at our stealerships are viper techs, people who know how to work on the"specialty" vehicles they so willing promote and take our money for. Our dealership knows nothing about the truck they sold us. :(

It is expected to be done right the first time. - Good luck Patrick. :)

Hertz has the Shelby GT for rent...like to get a report on it! Since you need a car.....for a day!!!!!! Then we can get a "Where you go come" report!

Damn Patrick, install from hell :( Hope they can find their shoe horn and slap those gears in soon ;)

install

Patrick,is the problem that the pin[ not pinon] and ring gear are making contact, with the 5.13's this was the case, there's 1 of 2 things to do,mill the outside of the ring gear,or mill the pin,we did the ring gear,my installer has seen pins break so he went that route with the ring gear,I have not had any problems-hope this helps-I did pm you the other day

Go to the dealer and just before you talk to the tech, use your cell and call Devin. Then hand the phone to the tech. When I had my 4.56's done the guy that was doing them swore up and down that I would need a new carrier, wrong gears, missing parts, etc. This is what he does for a living. Finally, finally got him to talk to Unitrax, and bingo...."oh yea, it does work". He just had his mind set on Dana60, not our Dana Super 60. He even admitted that to me and said also that he actually liked it since he learned something new. My gears came out perfect, no noise or anything strange. So...have him talk to Unitrax, asap.

I'd be the same way, I wouldn't even know what to ask or suggest. Too bad the guy isn't willing to call for help, that to me speaks volumes...

Thanks for the input guys. Maybe the tech will call Unitrax on Monday. He seemed open to the idea.

Bill, I dont know if the pin is hitting the gear. The tech tried to explain that he was having to stack some shims together then put on the dummy bearing or something yada yada, then it doesnt fit into the diff case or something, says its too big. He said he kept doing the calculations and put it together and it would not fit. Maybe its as simple as, he is in the dana 60 mindset and not the dana super 60. I dont know.

patrick

Damn that sucks pat, It seems to me you have a tech with a big ego that doesnt like to ask for help or take it when offered by a by a customer. This job is at the most 6hours in and out. This guy is just backburning it. He should have this thing firgured out in two days maX...

He actually seemed open to calling up Unitrax. He never knew I told the shop foreman that they could call Unitrax earlier that day for help. No communication. I do think he stopped working on my truck and was doing other things. No way he is standing there trying to figure it out for 4 days!!

Dont techs get paid per job? If the book says a job is a 5 hour job, thats all they get paid for it, 5 hours. If they finish early they can start another job and make more money. If its takes longer, then its the tech's dime not the dealers? Dont tech's own their own tools too? This is what I have heard but am not sure.

Yeah techs are on commision so they get paid per job. Usually diff rebuilds are considered a "gravy job" because with experience they are simple to do. It seems to me this guy cant get it together within the time he was thinkin so now he's going to complete it on his spare time. Meanwhile he will continue to do other easier work so he can make his 8 hours for the day. Yeah techs do own their tools, i'm at around 14k in just tools alone and I still dont know where it went. Well hopefully this was just a miscommunication between the shopforeskin and the tech. Hope fully he does call unitrax on monday and get some advice as to what maybe wrong.

I thought so. Each day that I showed up, my truck was on a lift and nobody was around doing anything to it. He was off doing other jobs for sure.

I'm trying to figure out what his problem is by your description but :dontknow: He is either having problems with the pinion depth or the preload. Also, the only shims that need to be stacked are the pinion bearing preload shims - that step of the procedure can be tedious.

David, he did mention that he has to get it right or if he puts it in it could be damaged if it was wrong..........something like that.

What are the "calculations" he kept mentioning to me? Regarding how many shims to use or something?

patrick

Patrick,

Same thing happened to mine. Couldn't get the pin in!! Put the gears in without the new carrier, shimmed them up and all is good!!!:D
