BigRed460's build thread

Its just racing bro, sometimes stuff doesn't work out. This truck will run again, and hopefully soon. I am not a patient person.

The oil starvation problem has been eliminated because the bearings and lack of burn marks on anything. The builder has said the damage is focused above the rings. Oil starvation/water problems would lead to heat or burn mark somewhere.

Right now not to bad looking another set of pistons and a fresh bore, the problem is I need an exact cause before I put her back together

That's what I'm not getting? Rings should've eaten up before marring pistons? Or there's our problem. Rings were gapped way too small:confused:

That's what I think, the bore was measured to be correct. I think the gap was set to tight and as soon as it got some heat it in it fubared.

ouch:mad: Im surprised they are tight since he knew you were going to spray a big shot:dontknow: Man that sucks bro.

I saw the Pistons come out today the rings are stuck to the Pistons somehow. they have basically the whole motor now and told me I would have an answer by Monday I'm just out to enjoy my weekend here in b'ville maybe if I'm lucky I'll still get my 180 t shirt.

got some friendly competition going on between my 05 with a Paxton and my uncles 08 with headers and intake.

i have an extra engine if you want to use it

thanks for the offer that's awesome but thankfully this truck is nothing more than a race vehicle for me now, so no big rush to get it back together I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a crankshaft though which sucks.

Going back with oem or aftermarket? That stock piece has a nice price tag on it.

The builder will cover whatever you need though, right?

I was wondering that also. I have a buddy that just blew the gut out of a brand new 5k custom moser rear end and because is a racing product there is no warranty.

Engine builders across the world just hit the floor and started rolling around laughing.
being that it was a race engine I am assuming it had zero warranty. that being said the filter already has a 10k of mine and this is not the first engine he still for me or my family so I would assume he's going to stand behind his product. I want to know an exact cost first I'm not worried about assigning blame I just want to know the engine can be put together right because something was wrong with it.

If it makes you feel any better your not alone.
At least you have a long history with him just went through this with a known Hemi builder .

one engine showed up didn't even pull it out of the crate before i sent it back it had to go back 3 times. next one was a 11k short block arrived and we had to pull the crank to repair it fixed it an ended up spending another 9k on a new rotating assembly and just tossing the original one to the side.:banghead: .

After repair

I realize that cars, trucks, and racing aren't cheap. I also realize that I have a champagne tongue and a pocket full of beer money. But this thread is REALLY making me have second thoughts of doing any kind of build on my motor. I can't imagine (nor afford) to drop 15K on an engine build, drive it less than 30mi, and have it blow up with the chance of the builder not being atleast partially responsible.

I agree the builder should be liable if the engine can't make it through basic break in miles and dyno pulls. If it holds together that long your rotating assembly is great! Now obviously little things can happen but should be easy fixes, not remove the block type fixes
Hope they give you good news today sir. :s:

This really sucks to see, you have a great attitude about it at least.

To all the guys worried about doing a build, etc., I cant stress enough that it is money well spent to have one proven shop do all the work, install, assembly, dyno, etc. It may be a little more money, but when something like this happens then there's only one place to point a finger. I don't mean any disrespect at all to the OP, I am definitely a DIY guy and it would be very hard for me to have someone else work on anything of mine, but IMO based on experiences I have had, if you cant do the whole thing yourself, I would have someone else do it or not do it at all. I've had multiple customers who have brought me a fresh built motor only to find out there was a major problem with it before we even pushed it with any power. This lead to expenses far beyond what they would have spent to have one shop do everything from the beginning.

Being 100% open and honest, I will say that Doms original setup was my first big viper build and large turbo kit build, and I learned some stuff the hard way on his. We were doing things very few had done, and I had never done, and that led to money being spent to fix problems. We learned how far we could and couldn't go on head gaskets, and a couple other lessons that ultimately cost ME a couple thousand dollars in labor/materials. Dom wasn't out anything other than some time with the truck, but when you are doing something new/pushing limits, things wont always go as expected and that will cost someone some $$$. Pick a proven shop that has the results you want and not just the "its gonna be incredible someday" internet wishing; and have them do the whole package.

Justin you hit the nail on the head! Not only this but its really recommended that your machine shop indeed knows our engine and has the 5 cyl deck plate to ensure a correct bore to all cylinders. It's not for your average engine machine shop!! :burnout:
Good Luck Red and I have a feeling they'll do you right.

well with that being said , the trucker picked up my truck and i'm spending 15k, having it done by todd abrams over at a&c performance , heard awesome good things and talking with him, he knows his shit!!!!!, stage 3 heads , forging the bottom end, k1 billet rods, all the best parts , and it will be a killer motor.new centerforce clutch and fidannza flywheel, larger manley valves, awesome build.

Have you started a build thread?
