Checking Interest: Custom Alum. Battery Tray Box

Heh heh...I wish they were all free, Chuck. Unfortunately, we (yes- even me) will have to pay a few bucks for these. It won't be too bad; I'm guessing under $100 or so. It's not a bad price considering the custom welding and fabrication labor, top quality materials, powdercoating, etc.

Thanks for hangin' with me, folks. We'll get this done ASAP.

Sorry for the delays folks. With my accident, being out of town, and the shop being slammed, it's taken a little longer than expected. Still, a pretty tight schedule. :)

The hinges are (finally) here and I think we're pretty much done with the tweaking. I just need a fully-assembled box to figure out how the seal is going to work. Same goes for the latch, but that should be pretty easy.

I'm headed down to the shop tomorrow, and we're scheduled to do all 15 boxes then (laser cutters ROCK!). I will take PLENTY of pics.
Then it's off to the powder-coaters, which shouldn't be all that long depending on how busy they are.

Get your checkbooks ready folks....heh heh.....

What's the ballpark on cost?
any idea yet?

Oops. Disregard that, I didn't see the last 2 posts for some reason before I posted my message, looks like you already gave a ballpark.

Ballpark on cost is somewhere between the grassy lot on 4th St. and Yankee Stadium.
:D

Seriously, I'm trying to keep them under $100.
I've seen others out there, that are non-custom or plastic (and some that don't even come close to fitting!) going for $80-200. I think we'll be in good shape without being too outlandish.

ROFLMFAO. Gotcha!

You want black or red or silver?

Ya, you got me bro.:D I would like red if it is the same red as our valve covers. Otherwise, make mine black.

That's the red I'm going for. I'm sure they can get damn close.

Sweet! I am ready for mine!!!!

Thanks for all the work on this Kevan! How is the truck coming after your Taco Hell run?

No boxes today. The wrong hinges came in. I was so bummed.
The correct hinges will be there in the AM. We'll get the hinges cut and installed ASAP.

Plan on seeing a complete box installed in a truck by the end of the week!

I should also be able to get a more precise quote together for you guys once we have complete units.

Ntwork- The truck is coming along fine. Gets the new bumper & fascia on Monday (10.16). I should have it back on Tues. or Weds.

Kevan, I know it's late in the game, but I need to bow out of this for the time being. I'm having a custom CAI fabbed up and I'm not sure if I'm going to have the battery tray to mount the box in. So please take me off the list and if things work out and it's not too late by then, I might jump back on the wagon again... I know these are going to look great!

As you can see, the foam seal is ROUGH. I did it quick so we could get the measurements correct and get the hinge set. For the regular units, I'll be using 1/2" wide strips of the soft foam. It will also be black instead of white.

The lid in the pics is 1/8" short. The regular units will have the lid extend to the hinge edge.

The mount brackets will be dropped down about 1/2" to 3/4" onto the back wall of the box. This will give the top a smoother edge (no weld), and the brackets a stronger weld. It will also allow that mount bolt closest to the front of the truck to use the stock mount bolt.

The latch is your standard stereo door latch (push to open). The foam crushes enough to allow complete action. The latch and latch plate will be riveted into place, making them easy to replace when they get broken. :)

Everything you see will be powder-coated, even the hinge. The only thing that won't be are the latch, the latch plate and the inside of the hinge (where the dowel resides).

That's the first one folks. Now it's just a matter of getting the time on the laser cutter and ripping them out.

Let me know what you guys think and if you have any questions.

Remember: Only 15 unit will be made on this first run.

Thanks everyone!

SgtBo- You're taking aMoparMan's slot. Good timing. LOL

A couple more things:
Weight is somewhere between 1 and 2 lbs. Nothing major. Aluminum is good like that. :)
Installation is less than 5 minutes. It's only 3 bolts (two 13mm; one 10mm).

The tough one, that will require more than 30 seconds to do, is the 10mm bolt at the bottom of the box. It's "double threaded". It threads into the bottom of the box, and then holds a couple of hose lines away from the exhaust manifold/header. You'll have to hold it tight to the bottom of the tray when installing the bolt so that everything is tight when the bolt reaches the bottom of the box.

It's a little tough to describe, but you'll be able to figure it out once you get it in your hands.

I'll be driving around with this prototype installed all day today, and possibly this weekend. We'll see how long that hobby store foam lasts. LOL

Thanks folks!

Kevan,

The box thing looks great. I can't wait to see the finished product when it arrives. I am looking forward to it.

Thanks again for all your efforts and hard work.

I will have to buy you a gift certificate at your favorite crash through fast food place. ;) ;) ;)

Ok, here's the latest list:

Mike Nice- RED
MYTRAM- BLACK
sstdusty- WHITE
AZviper- RED
Viprtek- ????
BlackRamSRT10- BLACK

Fun2XLR8- RED (or BLACK)
Iltemprd- BLACK
Ntw0rk- RED
SgtBo- BLACK

***Viprtek- Please confirm your box and color. Thanks.
***SgtBo- Please confirm your color.
***SstDusty- (1) White box might get a little pricey when it comes to the powdercoating costs. I'll check price for ya, but just in case do you have a 2nd option? Black? Red?

The powdercoater has a cool silver-ish color called "stainless". I've seen a few pieces with that color. It'd be a great match for anyone with a silver truck. Just an option to consider.

I should have a quote-able number for everyone sometime this week. I'll post it here ASAFP.

(IRONY: I do this entire project, and left myself off the damn list!)
